My daughter and her husband and our 2.4 year old came for a visit. To my knowledge, Uzie had never been around toddlers or miniature humans…He is very wary to strangers to begin with, has gotten better since the 9mos with us, and especially when they proffer a treat, he will even take it gently with uncurled tail! Anyway, long story highlights: when Drew has a meltdown as most children will do out of their element and no nap, the screaming really made Uzie nervous. (my body tenses too!!) I was in the other room, my daughter who is 7mos pregnant was carrying Drew to the living room (not making any sounds at this point, but I guess he just could not comprehend the two headed figure...!) and had to pass Uzie on his bed. I heard this blood-curling girly scream and ran to find out that it was not the baby being eaten by the dog, but Uzie having the meltdown... would not move from the bed until I came into the room to let him outside. Up to this point, his 'fear' had subsided and was generally ok with the new comers, though looking at me, like " why do they have to be here???" Drew is a mini dog whisperer as he lives with a Pom and Pom/chihuahua mix. He literally does not look, talk, or walk towards (any) of the dogs and they like this of course. Anyway, Uzie would growl etc when someone besides me would walk into the room. I of course sat next to him on the floor the first day and night, and he slept in my bedroom separate from the guests all three nights. I guess I am pretty proud of him as he had no inclination for escalated fear or aggression towards anyone. Got a lot of exercise and outside time. Right now he is VERY emotionally happy to have normalcy to our routine. Just one thing to add, he is not feeling to well physically as he got stung by four ground dwelling yellow jackets on our walk this am so he has something else to deal with today. PS: cortisone cream mixed with Adolf's meat tenderizer helped with the swelling and itching as well as a Benedyl....Never a dull moment. He is the most vocal Basenji I have ever met, no sounds like the one I heard on the rescue page from BCOA. Anyone else experience this sound???

When I first heard of them, I thought nonsense but went looking. It's the same principle as tight chutes for cattle. The woman who did the resea and developed the hug machine for autistic clients has helped spread t he tecnology.

I can only comment on my experiences with Kipawa, my first basenji, who is just shy of 2 years old.

@viv58:

1. OBS #1: they were only affectionate on their terms and didnt like to be petted or picked up.Is this more common than not. They wanted to be by you, but hands off for the most part.

2. OBS#2: Off the leash - they are unpredictable and may not come when called. Had some wild roaming experiences at the off-leash beach. Always kept treats -and 95% of the timeit worked.Can you train them to counter this? or is this a stretch ?

3. OBS#3: Not snuggly

4. OBS#4: Only looked me in the eye when I had food- everything was a distraction.

1. Kipawa is just an extremely affectionate dog. His affection for me is special, but he recognizes all family members and care aides who come into the house and enjoys their attention and gives it back. He loves being petted and adores being massaged, but has a preference for it being from someone in his 'pack' (family members and care aides). He will tolerate being picked up by anyone, but prefers it when I do it. He is a little uncomfortable when turned on his back, however, we practice this quite a bit and he's getting better at it, especially if tummy rubs are included.

2. The only areas Kipawa is off leash is in our backyard or dog parks that are fully fenced. For these places, he is predictable, because he is very used to them. He usually comes when called, but if it doesn't work, I carry the squeaker part of a squeaker toy with me, and that most always brings him back. If he needs to come to me based on an emergency situation (say he got onto a street by accident), I have a word/sound that I only use in emergency situations. He is excellent at responding to that. All this said, if he spotted a bunny in the dog park, I don't think the emergency recall would work. Based on his breeders seeing him this summer, they have indicated he has a very high prey drive.

3. Kipawa is super snuggly all the time and is also a 'velcro dog'. We are tightly bonded. He is on my lap when I watch TV, or at least laying against me. He sleeps under the blankets on my side of the bed.

4. He easily looks me in the eye. If I am talking to him, we have full eye contact. He enjoys when we give each other 'soft eyes' - the slow blinking a person/dog might do when fully relaxed or before settling down for a nap. If he is distracted (only happens outside) I use the command 'watch me' to get eye contact. Usually 95% success rate, but that would go down to zero should he see a bunny.

I can't answer your other questions. Kipawa will be a solo dog in our home. As for the breeders, his breeders were Therese and Kevin Leimback (FoPaws Basenjis) from Washington state. We researched for a year before selecting them. Their breeding program concentrates a great deal on temperament.

I've been considering this since you first posted . My pregnancies are many many years ago but I can't think that the Basenjis I had at the time reacted differently to it, but if this coincided I would give it some consideration and of course if she returns too normal after that would more or less clinch it.

If you go down the homeopathic road, I would give her Sepia to help stop the peeing as long as you're absolutely sure there's no infection.

Sorry I haven't responded to this post sooner; I got busy & forgot about it. I don't check the forum nearly as often as I should.
To answer above questions:
My girls have both been around bulldogs before. Oddly enough, a guy I dated about a year ago had one, and although not outwardly aggressive or anything, they didn't seem to love her. She was attention starved though (first among reasons why a relationship did no develop with this guy…), and was very overwhelming, barreling around chasing them. They just tried to avoid her mostly. At dog shows and stuff, they don't seem to be weirded out by bulldogs.
Otto does better with dogs than people, and he prefers small dogs/puppies to people. My girls seem to love everything except some other female basenjis. Otto is neutered, Lola is spayed, and Callie is not as she is currently being shown.
Because the times we can visit one another are few & far between & having one on ones would require introducing them on Otto's turf, I don't think its feasible to introduce mine to Otto one at a time before the move.
All three are crated when humans are not around, so leaving them out together unconfined is not an issue.
My dogs are intense in that often when they meet a new dog, they will "rush" the dog, sniffing, etc. On leash, I don't allow this behavior with strange dogs, but at dog parks, etc, they sometimes can be overwhelming to more submissive or nervous dogs.
My dogs are constantly meeting and playing with new dogs and are very well dog socialized. Otto is less so, but, again, tends not to have a lot of issues with smaller dogs.
The meds have made a definite improvement in Otto's mood, but he still bites occasionally when he's overstimulated. The most recent occurrence was during a visit with my boyfriend's dad. His dad unwrapped a present that was in brown paper bag material. Otto was interested & started playing tug of war with dad. Otto got a little too excited, and when dad tried to calmly end the game, he got bit.
Thanks for all the tips. Hopefully, everything will go just peachy, but we're trying to be as prepared as possible, with any little advantage possible.
