"Taz" my Basenji/Terrier Mix

Show Off Your Dog
  • I would say more of a typical Fox Terrier head then hound/Basenji… and Most all terriers have the same type of characteristics as a Basenji. Regardless welcome...

  • I see Basenji if I cover up the ears, which look Jack Russell to me. Jack Russell/Basenji cross? That's a recipe for trouble…...but hopefully the fun kind. :D

Thanks for the welcome. I would, however, bet my life on him being Basenji. He has almost every trait that the Basenji has including the cat like tendencies where he likes to rub up against me like a cat, he has the same yodel type bark that the Basenji has as well. I could go on and on but I can tell you the only traits I see for a terrier are some physical characteristics. Yes, maybe some of the terriers have traits of a Basenji but not that many. I have raised and bred Jack Russells for many years of my life, so I know the traits of most terriers and I have never, ever seen a terrier that acts like he does. I will have to upload some video of him barking when I can catch him doing it. He also has a very strange gurgling growl he does when wanting me to throw the ball.

  • Yes I agree with you. I see either Jack Russell or Smooth Fox Terrier, not sure which one. He is very fun and he definately keeps me busy. And, yes, TROUBLE is the word I would use as well, hence his name Taz. He is so Tazmanian Devilish. ;)

  • Taz looks a great dog, congratulationa and welcome

  • He is 22 lbs and stands somewhere between 16 and 18 inches to my best estimate He won't stand still long enought and wants to play with the tape measure, so I can't measure him correctly, lol.

Oh yeah, I'd say Basenji/Jack Russell with those looks and those measurements. Enjoy!

  • What an adorable face… makes me want to squeeze it and give it a couple of kisses on each cheek!

  • He looks full of mischief. Welcome Taz.

He is definately full of mischief. He certainly lives up to his name.

I can see why someone would think there was Terrier, but I'm not so sure about Basenji. (The only way to know for sure is to do a DNA test.) Both of your dogs look very similar. What breed, or mix, is the older one?

@iris-shuman said in I would like you to meet "The 'Marvel'-ous Prince T'Challah" a/k/a Prince: Iris was born in December too Not much of a surprise when you think about it ! Basenjis in the Northern Hemisphere come in to season through September/October/November and whelp their litters November/December/January. A great many litters' arrivals cause the turkey to be put back in the oven on Christmas Day while the puppies are delivered ! Decrease the size of the photo and you will be able to show Iris to all of us. And do as Tanza suggests to Daureen - get her Fanconi tested.

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

So pretty and unique; glad that you ended up getting him and hopefully he never has to find a new home again…moving and being displaced really can mess with a dog (or anyone for that matter)...hope you have many years of great fun and mischief.

She likes watching Maya in the ring as she says Maya is so elegant trotting around compared to our labs and pugs! :D But she certainly wouldnt have a basenji herself, and i was never allowed one when i lived with her as she didnt like the breed. But i agree with Nicola, i cant believe she doesnt like my little Maya - who couldnt love her? :D

Love the pictures!! Adorable poser…I've always consider paper products a staple in my B's diet! I have to keep all garbage cans either up where she can't reach or with a secure lid. It's gotten to the point that I forget my manners everywhere else I go and don't put my napkin on my lap!
