Odd behavior (for a human)

Basenji Talk
  • The other day I had Gossy at the nearby city park, which also has the ball fields. We we walking quite a distance from the ball game spectators (Gossy doesn't like crowds) when suddenly this lady (maybe in her 30s) comes running up to us. "I want to see your dog!" It took me by surprise - most people if curious walk up and ask either to pet the dog or ask about the breed. So her comment gave me pause - it made me very uncomfortable. I said "Why" and she just repeated "I want to see your dog - it's a basenji right?" I was now thinking either she thinks this is her lost dog or she wants to grab it. I said "You can see her from where you're standing". She kept persisting but not coming closer (she was at this point only a few feet away) with that same comment, "I want to see your dog." I told her "I don't think so, I don't know you and I don't know what you want with my dog". She finally said she loved dogs and then said good day and finally left. Normally I'm quite happy to let a person pet my dogs and glad to answer questions. Maybe I was too paranoid about dog snatching but no one has ever acted this way before.

  • How weird! For whatever reason that lady approached you and Gossy as she did, you just never know what would happen so I think being cautious and following your instinct was a good move. I also tell people that my dog doesn't like strangers and that usually keeps them at bay.

  • I have a cousin who is labled "emotionally retarded". This is totally something she would've said and done. She's in her mid 40s. Maybe the lady was a bit off????

I know this is an old topic, but when my Stella plays, she can get a little aggressive too. she's drawn blood a few times! She's probably a little over a year old now; It didn't take long at all to train her to stop, all I have to do is tell her 'no biting' and she'll stop. She also loves to lick my wounds and bite off the scab that SHE made.

all 3 of our Basenjis do this funny sit. My theory is because Basenjis originated in countries where the ground is hot they have evolved to sit like this to protect their delicate rear ends :D . Now that they live in different climates i believe they do it to avoid, heat, cold, mud. I also think there is something in the fight/flight theory. Lisa your description of Xander made me laugh. Malaika hovers about an inch from the ground when doing her down stays in class, in cold weather she is allowed to do it on a rug, however she still likes to hover if we don't insist she goes down completely.

I'd leave him out for as long as he wants to be out in the snow - but not without a fence yard. As Tanza said, it only takes one car – or one annoyed neighbor -- to take him out, and he won't be adverse to taking on coyotes, so why risk it? Most people seemed to have huskies or malamutes when I grew up in Alaska and they were seldom indoors. They'd even curl up and go to sleep in the snow, while it was snowing, and remain under a blanket of the stuff!

We generally prefer the company of our basenjis to humans! We do enjoy our dog park friends that we see every evening, and the "Sunday basenji group" that also meets weekly, love all the dogs and humans in that group. But I have to pry my husband out of the house to visit "regular" friends, he would much rather stay home with the kids…and truth be told, so would I! Anne in Tampa
