  • Andrew– Your Logan is distantly related to my Spencer. Spencer has always been a sweet, kind dog, with the gentlest, most loving temperament, so perhaps Logan shares these traits. I'm so glad you had him tested for Fanconi and I'm relieved that he's not afflicted, because there are many Fanconi dogs in that lineage. I'm happy that Logan is one of the lucky ones, and I wish you all the best in finding a wonderful forever home for him. He's a beautiful boy, and I wish I could take him. If he were female, I would. I don't know how I can help, but let me know if I can.

  • @switchlanez:

San Diego weather is close to ideal year round, our fences are high (he's not a jumper), and we would line the backyard so he can't dig out, can he live in a sectioned off area in our backyard with another dog? I'd think so if they've lived outdoors for centuries in Africa.

    He's a lovely looking dog.

I think the dogs in Africa enjoy a lot of time socializing with their humans. I'm so sorry that your situation changed so quickly that it has made it not possible to keep a basenji. Rather than keep him outside all of the time, please try to find him a home that will love him. Contact BRAT.

  • UDDATE: When it came to the point handing him over to a new family, my family insisted to continue caring for him after realizing how beloved a family member he is. (Also consider this thread was started on impulse in reaction to my employment situation.) My travel situation got postponed so I've had a few extra weeks to train/transition the duty over to them. Logan is in very loving and capable hands. Thank you everybody for the concern and honest advice!

While American breeders do indeed often rehome Basenjis once they have finished, ie. become a champion, this is far less prevalent in Europe. Post me privately - my email address is on my website listed in my signature block - and I will put you in touch with breeders for next winter's crop of puppies

A lot of people get 2 pups at once, but different litters, opposite sex. I personally prefer one at a time so they bond more with humans than each other. Getting another the next season gives time to get the first settled. Of course, then you have another round of house breaking etc. A lot depends on your own experience with the breed. Good luck ... the link Pat gave you is your best bet for well bred puppies. :)

Thank you so much for your advice. We just e-mailed a member of the bcosw. :) basenjimamma, Thank you for that :) We had thought of that, as we have researched quite a bit, and are going to definitely make sure that no one is allergic before we take one home.

Monica, Another good place to start might be BCOSW. There is a pretty extensive breeder directory there, and if those breeders do not have puppy plans, they can probably direct you to others who do. You may need to wait to get the right puppy from the right breeder, but be patient. http://www.bcosw.org/ or on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/#!/bcosw?ref=ts Maybe you can come to our fun match in April and meet some of our members. Of course adoption is always a great option too. -Nicole

I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)
