  • @Kosuzu:

Do you get the impression that Basenji's are training us rather than the other way around!?

    All the time!

  • Must say Kaiser is only 11 months old and his owners are well trained in the "leave it then lose it" and "find it then it's mine" tricks, have nearly been in the same position once or twice myself with the bathroom trick, I'm a bit of a slow learner with that trick. Laughs a bundle is a Basenji.

  • Mine steal the TP out of my hand and eat it!!!!! Crazy Bs!!!!

Basnji's really are like ninjas, silent and deadly….lol

  • Mine has learned not to waste time trying to play with me in the bathroom. I go in, start doing what I need to do, and this little face leans in past the door jam… just enough for the one observant eye to see I am probably indisposed...
Then all hell breaks loose... How much damage can one (previously sleeping) basenji can get into in just five minutes? Of course my yelling commands with the echoing bathroom walls (ala Wizard of Oz style) does NOTHING!
Plus the flush is the the alarm bell. She knows to hide as soon as she hears it.
I walk out of the bathroom with shredded kleenix, phone cords, blankets everywhere, smudged glasses, etc. I keep the door open as a possible deterrent... not that it helps much.

Hahaha, I know exactly how you feel. Great story.

  • Kosuzu: but god forbid the wind should blow while they're trying to go! Funny little dogs they are!

Even though this is a video of a cat, has your Basenji ever done this, mine has!

  • That's cute! Cricket does not subscribe to the slow stealthy approach. It's all about as much destruction as possible in the shortest amount of time while I'm indisposed. Everything is done in fast forward!

Kalani waits until my back is turned and the second it is he gets into mischief. As soon as I look at him he freezes with the thought of either "if I don't move he can't see me" or "what, I wasn't doing anything". I'm not sure which, but it is one of them.

Shaye is definitely not like that. She is a dog's dog, i.e., she loves most other dogs and will try to make every dog in the park play/chase her, sometimes to their great annoyance, but she feels no need to have the humans bother with her at all. At home, she mostly plays with Gemma, our B mix, and when she becomes tired, THEN she curls up on, next to, behind, or tries to get under, one of us. She's not likely to run up to strangers who come to the house, either, although she does eventually smell them out, and will gladly put up with a little petting.

@Basenjimamma: I remember reading that story about Carol..how funny and so true..I had that happen once when I flew to Sweden from Houston, with my then 6 month old daughter..the man behind me asked, rather rudely.." is she going to cry the whole way?" and I simply answered, "well I could arrange for that to happen".QUOTE] How perfect is that!!!! Great comeback!!!

EL D is almost 4 and his neck is 14. My Vet carries a toothpaste made by C.E.T. that comes in chicken or seafood flavor. It supposed to be better for tartar control.

@jys1011: It's really sad that people can be so ignorant & generalize characteristics over an entire breed… That being said...can you imagine how owners of pits, rotties, or dobermans feel. I'm sure they get ostracized all the time for having their dogs. However, there is no need for people to be down right rude! If they want to stereotype that's their business but show a little RESPECT & above all some MANNERS! YUCK! I would have purposely said something obnoxious (Oh please lady...I only feed my dog "quality" ingredients lol :D ) but that's just ME :D I can be pretty sarcastic when people offend me on purpose. And nasty remarks against my precious pooches...oooh god help those people!! Ha, ha…love the comment. I have heard comments like the one the OP was faced with...just not that many in one day :( I do feel that more and more dog people are realizing that Basenjis aren't nasty...they are different. But it does baffle me when people need to say such rude things outloud. Maybe we don't have that kind of folks around where we course because Dr.Tracy would kick their tushies! ;)

@ChaseandZahrasmom: Let's all just be thankful that B's are small dogs and not 110 Lbs beast! At least we can pick them up and tuck them under an arm and walk away with them while training! LOL! I have to do the same thing with Zahra sometimes. Amen! I was just thinking this earlier today while trying to control my pup…
