A boy that lives up to his name

Basenji Talk
  • My BRAT boy, Hunter, lived up to his name this morning!

I had to go out to my shop to grab a package of halibut out of my freezer for my boss (bribe to keep my job!!!).

I have 3 of the big Rubbermaid tubs full of kindling. Hunter was all in one of them, sniffing & going crazy. I know I have rats in my yard/woodpile/shop because I find their droppings. I don't mind as long as they don't eat my stuff and they stay out of my house!!!

Anyway, I was going to be late for work and couldn't get Hunter out of my shop! I thought I heard a little scratching from inside the bin he was investigating so I had a brilliant solution. Drag it out to the yard, so I could lock up my shop and go off to work! The minute I started to drag it a rat hopped out! Almost on my foot! Of course, I screamed like a girl (because I am one) and it ran between 2 bins and between 2 basenjis.

The basenjis didn't see it run but Hunter tracked it down and ran where it had run off to. He didn't catch it but at least it's out of my kindling box.

Extra treats before running out the door to work for being a good "Hunter"!!!:)

  • My first Basenji in the mid 80s caught a big rat and was shaking it around, let it fly and hit me in the leg with it. She quickly ran over and finished it off. She used to flush them out of my garage too. I live near a shipping port and they were coming off the ships.

  • Rats are all over.. I hear Beverly Hills is loaded with Rats..not the 2 legged kind either…

    Oh Sharron, good one!

Maybe God made rats for basenjis?

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

@tanza She's from Southeastern Bénin, very close to the border with Nigeria. We didn't set out to get a basenji, but the more I learn about the breed, the more I realize that's exactly what she is! Thanks, everyone, for the explanations. We want to register her with PAL so she can do lure coursing. (She's got quite the chase instinct...) We don't need a kennel name, but I was more asking just for my own curiosity. If she were to have a "kennel," it would be the streets of the region where we got her, the Plateau Department, since there's very little human intervention in dog reproduction in that part of the world. :)

This is DEFINITELY a Basenji Chi mix and NOT shiba. (Only the example of a Shiba is a Shiba for those who might be confused by the example pics.) Basenji has the white feet, white tip on tail AND the white spot at the nape, and the curled tail. does he/she "talk" ? My chi Basenji has an unusual talk that everyone loves. Some who know more about basenjis - a couple in the neighborhood who have 2 - call it the Basenji yodel.

@DebraDownSouth: Oh that was WONDERFUL. I love Jimmy Stewart. Hopefully he and beau are together again. I had that thought too - I'm sure they are. Might have to watch Vertigo this weekend. What's not to love about Jimmy Stewart?

@thunderbird8588: At least she seems to have learned, lets hope she generalises it to other cables. Somehow i dont think so:) Benji used to love being blown with the hair dryer on hot. When i had the hoover out he used to get under my feet, i think because of the noise he assumed it would provide the same enjoyment as the hairdryer. I put the nozzle on him, not realising the suction was so strong. He wasn't amused and went into attack mode :) Our Benji LOVES the dyson. We have to take the nozzle over him every time we use it otherwise he goes in a huff! :)
