Kipawa is now home from the vet

  • The swelling was probably caused by all his activity. I didn't have a problem with it when I had Nicky neutered but I did when I followed the vet's direction and crated Nicky after his cancer surgery. He ended up with a seroma as big as a very large grapefruit. It took probably a bit over 8 weeks to resolve itself. Looked horrible but never really bothered him and did go away on its own. Nicky much prefers his freedom and a simple no bite collar. He drops his head when he has the lampshade on then walks into a a corner and tells me he will die if he has to wear it too long. He is quite dramatic about the "torture devices" in his life.

Fran, too much movement on your boy's part.. didn't they send home any pain pills? Those sure put my girl down for a couple of days.

Yes, we were sent home with six 10mg. Tramadol - one every 12 hours for 3 days. I'm not sure what kind of metabolism Kipawa has, but they don't phase him out at all!

  • Regarding the swelling, I am going to use some ice today, in a plastic bag and then with a face cloth over it so the ice is not directly on the skin. I hope this helps with the swelling. Will keep you all posted.

  • I hope Kipawa is back on the mend today! I wonder if the excitement of having a playmate caused adrenaline to interfere with the meds. I believe Tramadol is morphine-based, and it has always made mine pretty drowsy. Perhaps it will work better today when there's less stimulation.

  • How is the swelling today?

  • B's groggy?? Sleepy?? Does anything slow them down? Hope the ice helps the swelling.

  • Once every 12 hours isn't a sedative dose. Once every 6 hours does have sedative effects.

  • Oh..poor guy with the swelling…I hope the ice worked.

  • My guy had some swelling for a few days, it's not unusual. The exertion likely didn't help.

  • Ive had something called Tramal myself fr back pain and it makes me very sleepy…. Sounds like may be related.... Hope he gets better!! It should help, helped me...

  • @sharronhurlbut:

    How is the swelling today?

The swelling is definitely getting better and it is not so red. But darn it, depending on what position he is laying in, it looks like he is still intact!

  • It just takes time.

Bring your paperwork that the breeder gave you to your first visit because they will want to know some things like birth date, always (in the first year or so when lots of shots are administered) bring the vaccination record book Pam and Sheila gave you and ensure they make a copy of it and not just write it down..you will also want to update your copy as your pup receive shots so like I said..bring it so they can fill it in for you. Any questions you have regarding vaccinations I highly suggest asking your vet but also getting in touch with Pam to ask her opinion, she knows her dogs and her lines and she is better equipped than the vet to give you an honest evaluation on which to give. Also try to follow her guidance on neutering and spaying (if you plan to). I know with Oakley I followed their advice. It might be true or not but in my opinion basenjis tend to mature slower and I find they need more time for the growth plates to close before castrating is a wise choice.

Poor Cody! It was hard on Spencer (and me!) when we moved cross-country. At first, he would go and sit by the front door, waiting for someone to take him "home." I bought him new toys to play with and he would carry them to the door, sit beside them and wait. It took a few weeks, but he settled in. He still gets anxious when I bring in boxes, though.

I got a free copy of the Merck Veterinary Handbook at the Eukanuba on Friday. I haven't had a chance to really go through it but it looks like a nice reference.

I have to agree with that agilebasenji, prong collars are not for Basenji's that I have ever seen, however, food seems to motivate them much better!
