Ayo got in a fight with a Bassett hound!!

Basenji Talk
  • So yesterday was a perfect day at the park… Almost.. Right at the end when I was about to leave very proud because there had been no problems at the dog park and Ayo had a blast... In comes this Bassett hound, and it turns out I knew the owner from a site visit we made for a potential client who was going to buy a house.. Anyway..... We are talking and he starts telling me that he was away for a year and had left his dog with someone, but that he got him back but was worried because he was very anxious all the time etc etc.. And , the minute he is telling me that I think " that doesn't sound good" and when I looked over they were growling at each other and by the time I got there is had escalated.... We separated them and the result is Ayo now has a few scratches on hi neck and one on his face.. They are very superficial but still, I hope they don't leave a scar on his face....!!!! I was very angry at my self because... I felt it, and I didn't listen to my gut instinct when he first came in..... Anyway!!!! Got home and cleaned him up and put some antibiotic ....

  • You never know when something will set them off. Some weeks my Shaye is growly and snarky with some other basenjis, and other weeks like this one, she not only doesn't start anything, she doesn't get involved when others do get in a tussle. I have tried to be very alert to the darker "stripe" on her back which shows up when she's starting to get that mood on her! I don't think the scratches will leave scars on Ayo - usually the injury has to be deeper, and have taken hair out for scars to appear. All the scars Shaye has are stripes caused by trying to tell the cat what to do.

  • Thanks… The one on his face took a little hair out!! Hope it doesn't stay.....

  • I would think the hair will grow back - it soundsa sthough you separated them easily before major damage was done. These things do happen and it pays to keep an eye on your dog even when having a chat.

Seems the modern versions all have a rubber palm with with protruding nibs for removing loose hair, but lack the chamois for polishing. Can't seem to find a Chamois Hound Glove anywhere. After googling them, the search returned returned links to other dog forums that discussed them as well. Like here, people seem to know what they are, but no one knows where to get one. If you have one take care of it. Its seems you are in possession of a unicorn.

Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

When Phoenix got into a fight a few mths back with his brother My vet prescribed the same thing and it made Phoenix sleepy it's the pain killers i believe that do it cuz when he was done with them he was back to his ole self again . i wouldnt worry too much maybe just the excitment from the vet the fight and the meds. He's not throwing up right ? But i would say it's the pain meds that are making him lethargic.. I hope he feels better soon !!!!

Well…I free-feed, but because of my work schedule, and therefore, Jack's crating schedule, he gets fed on a regular schedule. I fee him in the morning, around 7:30am, and he usually gobbles that down, then I feed him when I get home, and leave food out for him all evening. Because I do have a normal schedule with him, I can see when he is eating, and when he isn't. Lately, he has taken to eating his food while we are eating dinner (which is great!) he brings a few bites to the dining room, drops them on the floor, and lets out a huge sigh and eats them. I know what he is saying "Boy, I sure wish I had what you're having...."

@EskiLovr: Don't forget that the most favorite game to play for most Basenji's is, guess what? Chase games! They love to chase other dogs, and BE chased too. That's the favorite activity for our boy at the dog park. If he can find another dog that understands how to play the 'chase game' he's in heaven! And heaven help you if want to get ahold of him around the house. If I step after him, he immediately darts away and looks back as if to say "come-n-get me" tail wagging the whole time! That sounds just like my boy! He will grab something he knows he isn't supposed to have [i.e. a sock] & make sure that I see him then just start running through the house. If I don't chase him, he will drop it after he notices I am not chasing him. Haha. It cracks me up!
