Ayo got in a fight with a Bassett hound!!

    So yesterday was a perfect day at the park… Almost.. Right at the end when I was about to leave very proud because there had been no problems at the dog park and Ayo had a blast... In comes this Bassett hound, and it turns out I knew the owner from a site visit we made for a potential client who was going to buy a house.. Anyway..... We are talking and he starts telling me that he was away for a year and had left his dog with someone, but that he got him back but was worried because he was very anxious all the time etc etc.. And , the minute he is telling me that I think " that doesn't sound good" and when I looked over they were growling at each other and by the time I got there is had escalated.... We separated them and the result is Ayo now has a few scratches on hi neck and one on his face.. They are very superficial but still, I hope they don't leave a scar on his face....!!!! I was very angry at my self because... I felt it, and I didn't listen to my gut instinct when he first came in..... Anyway!!!! Got home and cleaned him up and put some antibiotic ....

    You never know when something will set them off. Some weeks my Shaye is growly and snarky with some other basenjis, and other weeks like this one, she not only doesn't start anything, she doesn't get involved when others do get in a tussle. I have tried to be very alert to the darker "stripe" on her back which shows up when she's starting to get that mood on her! I don't think the scratches will leave scars on Ayo - usually the injury has to be deeper, and have taken hair out for scars to appear. All the scars Shaye has are stripes caused by trying to tell the cat what to do.

    Thanks… The one on his face took a little hair out!! Hope it doesn't stay.....

    I would think the hair will grow back - it soundsa sthough you separated them easily before major damage was done. These things do happen and it pays to keep an eye on your dog even when having a chat.

    New update: Tika is no longer in heat! Yay! Remy got neutered and is doing great! We got a dog trainer to come in assess the situation and she thinks it is starting to improve compared to how I described it when I booked her to come. Only Maia seems to need the muzzle, she seems to be very unsure of the puppy. We are working with her to build her confidence. The puppy doesn’t seem to have any stress with Maia around and won’t start anything. The muzzle is on just in case when I am home alone as I don’t want anything bad to happen when if I can’t separate them. The puppy is getting lots of training time to help her learn how to behave properly. With 2 people here we can have the girls on short leashes and they are fine together. They did have a small altercation of snarling but no biting and no one got hurt. The older female backed down and walked away. As much as I want her to be the top dog it seems that the puppy has a much more dominant personality. If they figure out the pack hierchy hopefully everything will settle down. The trainer says there are no pack instincts in domesticated dogs, but after having 6 basenjis I can’t agree with that in regards to basenjis. We can walk the girls together without muzzles now so I think things are more positive and they seem to be improving every day. When Remy is healed from his neuter I will get the puppy spayed and hope that calms things down even further. So far there is a lot more peace in the house. Please anyone let me know if there is anything else I should be doing to keep these girls on track. Thank you for all your advice and guidance! I am so grateful for this forum as what is normal for other dogs is not so much with these guys!

    @Maca: i need to ask, do you have several bitches, do you have all locked on cages? i was checking several kennels, and all have several females so they are separate all the times? These 2 dont fight often, i mean the last fight was on january, before that, on september, and the first one was one year and six months, i mean they fight only on season.. these season Laika will be on a cage to protect her, or maybe not because Maca will flight to Mexico City to be breeding.. sure if she dont acept the male, wont breed, im not a believer to force the female.. so if she acepts the male will breed with him.. thats one plan. other plan is not breed her.. but i want to breed her so i can get spayed soon. why breed her? well, if i breed her will be with the best male actually on Mexico, the other nice male are his dad.. so its not an option, the other plan is to get a foreigner male.. but that will take more time.. i like the idea of wait to check laika get 3 years old. At this time I have two in-tact Bitches… there (fingers crossed) have not had ever any problems, even with C-Me whelping a litter in November... but when I brought them both home, I was super, super careful with their temperaments. I have had a bitch that was 5yrs, one of my other bitches whelped a litter and I kept one of the bitches. At the time I had 3 in-tact bitches, one neuter males. All was great until the puppy bitch I kept at 5 months wanted to challenge the 5yr old (not her Mom)... it was totally down hill from there. While I didn't keep them separate, we had way to many fights... and since the oldest was the first in the house, the youngest needed to be placed... she had a litter and got even worse, so it worked out perfect with one of my puppy people that really wanted two pups... I place the pup and her Mom in that home. It was a match made in heaven. I will not separate my house into packs... I will place problem makers in other homes....

    Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

    I am so sorry that Maya was attacked. I am fed up with people who let their dogs off the lead when they obviously shouldn't be. I avoid places where I am likely to encounter other dogs, you would not believe the goings on re-dogs at the country park it almost makes you feel ashamed to be a dog owner. You are lucky Maya coped so well. Fiji was bitten by a Rhodesian Ridgeback when she was a puppy and she is now terrified of bigger dogs.

    It was just the initial greeting that was off right? Dogs do forget certain cues sometimes…she obviously remembered you...but it might have freaked her out if you crawled up to her kennel, particularly if that wasn't something that you normally do. Imagine this...if my husband was gone for a long time, and he didn't tell me he was going to come home while I was sleeping, and creep up to the bed...it wouldn't matter how nicely he was talking to me, I would be SCARED by his unusual behavior, and his unexpected arrival. Next time you arrive home, try just walking in like you normally do and say Hi Sheba (and puppy) like you normally do, and I bet she will be overjoyed. We have to remember that dog brains work differently than ours in a lot of ways. If we try to think of them just like people, we usually end up getting our feelings hurt :) Hey, and thanks for serving our country! Stay safe!
