…in our country neighborhood..

I have never seen it before, but I am sure it was a basenji, rather chubby, tail a little fuzzy, but the "brother" barked and barked..he only wimpered..so funny because it totally perplexed Pippin...he didn't know what to think of it.

I hope I run it to the owners one day..then I'll find out for sure..but this little fella..or girlie was a true basenji look alike..
These dogs were both our in the fenced in yard..so I didn't get too close as it was on private property..

Pretty cool though..

Kembe always slept in our bed up until these last 2 years of her life. She was a bed and blanket hog - legs stretched out and took over the bed. I put her doggie bed in our room right next to our bed in her latter years - I was afraid of her falling or jumping off the bed and getting hurt.

They vary in size. I had dreams of a nice 18 pound bitch. My bitch won her championship, svelt, at a good 25 pounds. Her niece, our 2nd basenji, was this hard muscled machine and she topped 27 pounds at her best. (Sadly steroids from 4 yrs til death made her usually closer to 32 pounds.) I was at a show about 18 yrs ago and saw some part African basenjis that looked even bigger. But the European and US standards for size are almost identical (1 pound heavier for females in US).

As for the show ring sizes difference, someone who shows internationally can answer. I just know from rescue that most that I see tend to be bigger, not smaller, than standard.

The FCI (European) Standard:
SIZE AND WEIGHT :
Ideal height : dogs 43 cm (17 ins) at withers,
bitches 40 cm (16 ins) at withers.

Ideal weight : dogs 11 kg (24 lbs),
bitches 9 1/2 kg (21 lbs).

AKC Basenji:
Height: 17 inches (male
16 inches (female)

Weight: 24 pounds (male)
22 pounds (female)

I love that you have a dog who eats grasshoppers. What great survival instinct to have, if anything ever happened where he was forced to fend for himself….being able to catch things like that would probably get him by for awhile. My dog and my cat used to team up and catch voles together, but Beo always let them go, without harming them....never ate them. I don't think he'd be able to survive very long on his own.

Supposedly Beo's mom, when still in Africa, was very proficient at stealing and catching her own food. She continued to catch and eat little prey animals that went into their yard for a time after being brought into the US... before learning that humans provided food for her.

.....a year or so back I found what I thought was a stray dog begging me to take her in. Skin and bones. Turned out she had been on her own for over month in the wild. She was only puppy who had been, literally, left behind by her owners when they decide to move. (I managed to get in touch with her original breeder who was lividly trying to find her after making a check up call and discovering what had happened ....and this is exactly why breeders should make calls every now and again to check on the pup).

But, anyway, surviving in Alaska not the easiest thing for a puppy to do....she had some strong survival instincts. Most dogs die after a couple weeks, especially young inexperienced dogs.

Although my DH gets yearly "puppy lust", my personal rule is "I don't take any basenji under 2". By 2, their brains have developed and their attention span is longer than a nanaosecond (where you are concerned). They still have plenty of youthful energy but are not uncontrollable maniacs bent on destruction. That said, I confess I get puppy-lust myself, they are just so cute and funny and adorable. That is how they live to adulthood!

It sounds like she has a case of separation anxiety–not just grieving. I think there are several threads here on handling separation anxiety--which is a pretty difficult situation. I went through the same thing when I had to have Max's lifetime companion put to sleep. I got help from a veterinary behavioral specialist.

I agree. She should be through the grieving process by now (5 months later), and it may have developed into SA. Sad to say, it's generally not easy to fix, but it can be done with a lot of time, patience and love. You might want to Google it and see if the symptoms fit her behavior patterns and how one can start on the road to alleviating it.
