1.5 yr old basenji potty issues

    Not sure if this is the right spot to write, but im new here, so here it goes (basically same issue im having with my basenji). We have not crated her as she came with anxietey issues (3 homes in 1.5 yrs). We leave her in a room for up to 8 hrs a day while we are at work. She wont leave a mess when we are gone. We walk her three times a day and she usually 2's twice and 1's whenever we let her out. But she 1's and 2's in her room while we are home. We have tried keeping a schedule and feeding at the same times of day but she is so unpredictable with her potty schedule. Can anyone lend a hand?

    Do you physically take her out to 1 and 2 when you get home? When you are home, maybe go back to taking her out after play times and nap times, like a puppy. Give her tons of praise and a special treat when she does well.

    Just go back to basics and be very patient with her. I do notice you say 'in her room' - is she not with you when you're home? Perhaps that is the problem that she's not able to let you know when she wants to go out. I assume you feed her in the evening so she is bound to need to go after that.

    Patty nailed it… when you have an issue, you have to go back as if a puppy and start anew, which means you leash her to you at all times, say NO if she starts to go, take her out, praise and treat. The good news is unlike a puppy, it will go faster. But making really sure the room has been cleaned of odors using some enzymatic sprays/cleaners is a must.

    Is she flying with you or in cargo? I would suggest getting a different type of crate and start over with training. (hopefully that will get rid of some/many negative connections she has with the current crate.) Crate Games dvd has some excellent suggestions for getting a dog into a crate and liking it. If you can't get another crate, you could you take the current crate apart and do some crate games then put it back together and start over with the start of the crate games. Go slowly. If you're thinking about drugs, you will absolutely need to do one or more "test" runs before the flight.

    I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

    @NerdyDogOwner: On the topic of pee, I have a question/issue. I have noticed Gizmo seems to quite often have a drop hanging on his penis a lot of the time. Also it's sometimes white, almost as if it's sperm. Now the first thing I thought of was your typical puberty signs, wetdreams etc. since his blanket also has quite a few drops stains on it. Is this normal? Or should I be worried/aware about something else? Possibly just sloughed skin cells.

    I have always recommended that pups be carried from the crate to their "potty" place… at 12 to 16 wks, especially after waking up, there is no way they are going to walk all the way to a door, outside and onto the grass to pee... they just can't hold it that long. For us, I didn't care if they peed on the concrete, in fact 3 of my girls go on the concrete... one on the grass and my one boy mostly on the grass. And for cleaning up, really vinegar and water works as good if not better then all the store bought ones I have had over the years, and believe me, I have tried them all... Works great on concrete, tile, pergo, carpets....

    I do hope she losses interest. My B girl Sugar climbs. X-pens are definitely out unless they have a lid, and then she'll scream. I can block the kitchen off with baby gates if I have visitors but not from her-she'll hop right over from a sit. She has climbed the fence to get at a squirrel, but since I watch her I got to her before she got over. I'm just waiting for the tree climbing to start!
