Olive - 5 month old peeing machine

Basenji Training
  • I have read that basenjis real fairly easy to house train. My aunt has a female name Deena and she was really easy to train. Praise is the best reward for a pup who goes outside. Can't wait until next week. I will be getting mine!!

  • I've just read about your successful progress with your girl - I'm so pleased. The first steps are heartening as you know you're on the right track.

  • Thanks all. Olive's about 70% house-trained now. She doesn't poop inside or inside her crate. She still pees once in a while on the carpet if I let her out of my sight as well as in her crate occasionally in the middle of the night or when I leave the house for a few hours. SOOOOO glad she's a quick learner ha ha. Gonna start puppy school Sunday after she gets her rabies vaccine and spaying today. Top of the class, here we come!

  • Also, any thoughts on good bell or indicator training? I've been so concerned with getting her outside before she messes inside that I haven't been working on how she can let me know she needs to go out.

  • I know many who train them to ring a bell, but I really always just watch, take out often and RARELY ever have "accidents" because every accident increases the chance for more. By the time they are a few months old, every one of them have always whined or gone to the door to indicate. The thought of teaching to ring bell, then ring bell to go out.. lol really seems like a lot of work.

I did look for you though:

  • Yeah we were doing really well for a while, but it seems Olive is relapsing :(
She's holding it in until right when we get back, sometimes not even willing to walk towards the usual potty spot. She's even started peeing on my clothes ( a shirt or sock if she finds one on the floor). I think I'm gonna shift her meal times to a little later since rushing back home for a lunch feeding isnt always consistent and I can devote more time to watching her carefully.

  • ^i physically picked suki up from her crate and took her to the potty spot - she never peed on me and there was no chance of error on the way out. might be worth a try?

  • Treats when she goes and routine will help a lot. Once they know you take them out in the am for the walk, when you get home from work, and before bed, it will make it so much easier for you all.

  • Have you tried taking her for a long walk? Sometimes I think they make messes because it gets your attention. Try walking her for a good part of the evening if you can. Congrats on the progress!

  • Spammer, folks don't click on the potty link, it's a spammer selling a product.

@jkent said in 4 months old and difficult potty training: sometimes just looks at me when I give her the command to eat it, not understanding. She might be confused about the signals. Try eating a cracker while she's watching and then, setting her bowl down and telling her it's "okay" to eat. In the dog world, the boss (Alpha dog, or leader) eats first. Then the other dog(s) get to eat.

LOL long ago I had a chow and roommate. The roommate did not like the chow and yelled at her. She came home to find the chow had gotten into her laundry basket and pooped. My roommate was smart. She began being nice to the chow. It's like the AA saying, fake it til you make it. She eventually bonded with her.

He has a wheat/ beef/salmon/duck allergy and his tummy gets upset & bubbly. He can only eat his food no treats. So goes where he is starving to not wanting to eat. He has had this most of his life. He has been doing well on the Blue Buffalo Lamb & rice, but manages to leave the life bits. I can feed him a handful of food and out come the life bits, that our other dog Hoover vacuums up.
  • And he is peeing now!

@Nemo: Can you give more details of the situations when he pees on the couch? Well, it happened in two occasions in two different days. The first time we had been playing, we had gone for a walk after, we came back home, then I went to the kitchen to have some water and when I came back to the living room I saw him getting down the couch and voila! He had wetted the couch so I took him out right away. The second time was yesterday but I just noticed that the couch was wet, but did not see the moment it exactly happened, so I can't give many details. But I find it extrange, as mentioned, since he has been doing really well on potty training, I wonder what makes him peeing there.
