Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi everyone!

We just picked up our new girl yesterday from Texas (I still have to sit and type up a intro on the welcome thread ;) and of course we're looking for a basenji friendly and knowledgable vet asap. Willing to drive to see a good one (ie Mesa? Gilbert? whatever it takes) We're in the Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Scottsdale area….

    Thank you so much!!

  • I don't know of any because it's been a long time since we've lived in Phoenix. But you might try contacting Bev to find out who she uses. She may also have other recommendations.

  • Thank you LindaH - definitely asking Bev for sure! :)

@kjdonkers Yes, or at least a confined area with a potty pad set up or potty station. Then if she HAS to go, no disaster.

@tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

Thanks guys, I did email Sue at apubasenji's and she forwarded my email to someone on the board who lives close to me. The vet I've been using is fine but I really don't think he's all that familiar with Basenji's and I would rather take my two to someone who is!!

Hi Terry, Cairo is really great with people, kids, dogs, and if a cat would let him get near them he would be great with them too. He just loves playing with everybody. We socialize him allot. That is making it hard for us now because even though he is sore and healing from surgery, he just wants to play. He has sooooo much energy to burn off. If you have any suggestions we are listening. it should be over soon though. Thanks for saying hello. Dan

My C3 has the same itchy skin problems too mostly due to the 1001 allergies he has…but I use the Aveeno Oatmeal Ointment to help calm the itch & I also put Brewers Yeast tablets & Fish Oil tablets into his food to help keep his skin & coat healthy. Sometimes we need to bathe regularly (like once a week ) in the Aveeno oatmeal shampoo to help as well. Good luck!

I live in Boise, ID. Water and Gun dogs are popular. Sighthounds are not very popular, there is an active Greyhound adoption group though. Most vets in this town have a distaste for Basenjis, if they know what they are. My present vet, loves Basenjis. My former neighbor had an Afgahn, 2 cats and some ferrets. She had nothing but good things to say about the vet down the street. So I brought my hooligans down for an interview with the staff. This office treats about 6 other Basenjis. They had only seen the red and whites in person. They knew of the other colors, but had never seen them. So when I walked in with my red and white, black and white and tri, they stopped what they were doing to met them. They also knew about the African project. Those of us who are passionate about Basenjis are few and far between. Vets are the same way. When they are they passionate, their staff is also passionate about the breed. There might be 50 vet schools between America and Canada. This is a small community. Just start cold calling and asking what they know about Basenjis and who they would recommend.
