• Who knows why these peculiar and funny dogs do what they do! Cory and Jayden pick and chose who they will warm up to with no particular rhyme or reason. The more someone wants to pet them, the less likely they are to let them. They adore one neighbor and we suspect it is because he owns the cat that they visit with through the fence. I think they like him because he doesn't care whether or not they do (and he smells like their favorite cat). We had guests stay here with 2 teenage girls who wanted the dogs to like them. Forget it!!! The only way the dogs would approach them was if they were bribed with food. I felt bad for the 2 girls. Cory attaches herself to us on the sofa at night and stays there. Jayden puts in what he considers to be an obligatory 15 minutes and then deserts us for a chair of his own. I had an aunt who loathed cats and every cat she came in contact with would instantly wrap itself around her ankles and purr. Drove her nuts. The family cat would bring her dead field mice as gifts.

  • Ochre sounds a lot like my Kananga. 😃

He always comes over to sit next to me, but as soon as I pet him he backs up and wants to play a game. Only when he's tired or knows I'm sitting on the couch will he sit next to me and allow me to pet him. Very aloof with strangers but he's fearless with other dogs. When I have people over to watch a movie, he'll want to sit next to everyone on the couch. If too many people are present he'll get anxious. 1-3 people and he's ok.

Funny thing is, he doesn't like to greet me at the door when I get home, but he'll be jumping allover the place when I'm trying to leave. I get home and he'll be laying down in the living room waiting for me to come to him (perhaps he's trying to tell me something? 🙂 ).

He has baroo'd at people coming inside a few times. He's never done that with me. I know the jealousy…. 😃

    They are odd canines.... 😃

  • Who really knows why they do what they do. 😉

The only one that isn't a complete love $lut in my house, is Ruby. I always tell people to ignore Ruby and let her decide to come to you in her own time - she always does eventually. Ruby needs to get to know you first, so you have to earn her love - sounds a bit like Ochre to me :D. Even then, once Ruby has had enough affection, she moves off to her own private chair. I always do a little running dialogue of what she is probably thinking, and would say if she could, as she does her thing (i.e. "I've graced you with my presence, let you touch my fur - you most likely made a mess of it - now I'm off, you are beneath me"…that sort of thing :D:D:D). If you really want her affection, she is 100% sure to give it to someone else, so you have to play hard to get with her :D:D:D.

I do get a huge greeting from Ruby and the other 2 when I get home. But Ruby manages to pull herself together after a while and then largely ignores me if I want more of her attention.

The other 2 - forget it, they are pressed up against any human whenever there is a warm body available - they aren't discerning at all :D:D:D!

Oh, and BasenjiDiva's thing she wrote about cats, that happens with me. I don't really care for cats, mainly because I'm allergic. When I go to my friend's house who has 4 cats (and 2 dogs), I'll be damned if all the cats aren't trying to get in my lap .

  • There is a theory about why Cats will nearly always find the one person in the room who doesn't like Cats and jump on their knee. Don't know whether its true for Dogs as well or even if its true at all. Apparently if someone doesnt like Cats they dont look at them or make much eye contact. As eye contact can be threatening in the animal world, someone who doesnt make it can be seen as unthreatening and the animal will go to them.

Hey…if that is true, I'm going to start staring at my friends cats.:D:D:D:D

  • Houston

I can see it. Otis is very "on my own terms" kind of a guy..He loves my hubby,. which is funny to me, because the love isn't very mutual..my husband loves him, but he does not desperatly love him.
Otis will also shy away when you reach to pet on him, makes me feel as if he has been abused, which I know he hasn't at our house, and don't think at all happened at his breeder, just very aloof.
He will wag his tail like all get out, should I walk one of the other dogs and he sees this through the window…so funny, like he is trying to make sure I don't miss him or something..and he always gets his walk first, I am partial, he is my favorite...shame for telling the truth...

I guess maybe Ochre is trying to win Maria over by being very friendly to her, she knows you all love her regardless, so why waste energy showing it in return..maybe.
They are funny little creature aren't they though?
I truly love the fact that they have a brain and they are not afraid of using it..

  • One other thing I thought I would add is that I have always heard that the ones with more African in them are more cautious and standoffish.

In my house, I always thought that might be the reason Ruby was more standoffish than Brando - Ruby has more African than Brando. But when Aaliyah arrived on the scene, she blew that theory as Aaliyah has more African in her than Ruby…and Aaliyah is a social butterfly :D:D.

LOL! Too bad my aunt didn't know that. All she did was swear at it.

  • There was a post earlier about a B who snaps at the person who made the post but doesn't do this to anyone else. Sometimes an animal just decides it likes a person or doesnt like a person. Who knows why?😕

Ask your friend what kind of cologne she wears.

  • My Nicky is aloof and always has been. He is very particular in who he chooses to like. Nicky has been MY dog since the moment he laid eyes on me at the airport when I picked him up. Even though Sam went with me to pick Nicky up, it was clear that Nicky knew he was MY dog. When he was young and Sam asked him to do something like sit or down, he would always look at me as if asking, "Do I really have to listen to him?" When we first got Nicky we took him to Dillon's Beach to meet my family who were on a camping trip. My mom's reaction basically amounted to "He's not all that" since at the time she just couldn't see spending the money on a purebred dog. Nicky's opinion of my mom is "Well, you're not all that either". My dad's reaction to Nicky was "You look tired pup, let's take a nap". Nicky loves my dad, he dink dinks his tail for him which is about as close to wagging as he ever gets and solicits attention from him. The next person Nicky met that he truly loves is Sam's mom Pearla. He adores her and curls up with on the couch just like he does with me. She always spoils him and all our dogs, home cooking for them and telling visitors the chairs in the sunny spot in the room are for them. Nicky also loves Pat, he enjoys showing off with her in the ring and he is so "up" afterward, really enjoying looking good.
