Can you blame him? Lucky Benji! I was watching the UK version of "It's Me or the Dog" one time and they had an episode where a family pretty much always fed leftover Indian food to their dog. :D:D

  • I know human food is not good for dogs but they do seem to enjoy it. I think as the odd treat it is ok, Benji and Max thought so anyway :D

  • Houston

They are like vacuum cleaners at times.

I always said I would name our next dogs after vacuum cleaners, like Hoover, Kirby, Shark, and the like, it fits..
    I just don't think I want a Podengo named Dyson…;)

Otis loves anything going into a human mouth...except grapefruit...

  • Kananga never gets human food because he just likes to chew on it and spit it out. The only things he will actually eat thus far (and goes nuts for) is chicken and yogurt. If I finish a cup of yogurt, i'll let him lick the glass clean before it goes into the dishwasher. It's good for his digestion and he enjoys it. I've tried giving him things here and there but most of the time he is too unsure about what he's being fed, and will only chew and spit it out. Maybe he's just picky.

But it does guarantee that he basically never gets table scraps. At least I can be responsible by default. :)

  • Buddy eats his dinner then I eat and well, he get's a little of what I'm having too. Usually chicken, veggies, rice, etc. No Indian sauce on it though as I don't want to get up at 2am for loose bowel relief thank you.

What? I love having my beauty sleep interrupted because of bowel issues..and I think Otis knows that ;)

  • Ms. Petra:
The day your Otis eats grapefruit, you will take photos so we can see the sour face, won't you? :D

AJ likes to sit next to me looking pathetic while I'm eating. Once I was eating Fritos, which I know he doesn't like, but I gave him a piece of one anyway to see what he'd do. He sniffed it, pawed at it a few times, looked at me and ate it by nipping tiny crumbs off the edge until it was gone. Jerk. He only did that to say, "See? You don't feed me enough." He hasn't eaten one since then.

  • The thing that shocked us that our dogs went nuts for was whole wheat Matzo.

    They also love graham crackers.
Petey is also nuts for beer and red wine. He doesn't like white wine so much. Katie is a teetotaler. Won't touch the stuff.

  • Gossy loves her daily chunk of frozen raw cheap steak but will also do anything to get at my pretzels (I like the big stick kind), including climb all over me trying to get at it.

  • Radar and Nami are partial to carrot slices. They sniff at them in the beginning, but are soon chomping them down and racing back to the kitchen for another slice. They also get a little sliver of smoked ham once in a while… when I'm cutting up a ham steak for my omelet.

They're both big fans of chicken jerky (from Costco) and go totally nuts for a spoonful of cottage cheese on their dinner. We feed them dry food that we get at a feed store... Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. They love it and its available in 35lb bags!

  • Chicken Soup is good quality food. AJ won't eat it but each dog has his or her own taste. He gets Pinnacle. It does come in 35 lb bags, but I buy a bunch of 7 lb bags each time…to keep it more fresh and because it's easier to stow 4 small bags than 1 big bag. (He's a trucker dog.)

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?

If you leave your coffee down on a table that Sahara can reach she will try to drink it. She loves the stuff, hubby and I both use Hazelnut cream and sugar, so I guess she likes it too. She will also sneak ice tea, but her favorite is bottled water. Lots of H2O here.
