  • :D Yes those Basenji paws are amazing !

I agree, Otis uses his paws alot, especially when he meets new dogs, like at the dogpark or in obedience training. Of course usually the other dog looks at him as if he is an idiot..and all Otis wants to do is play..

Cute story..I bet he slept good.

  • When I walk Buddy and another person is approaching with their dog they say "oh he/she is friendly". Then Buddy get's close and suddenly he does the paw jump up "i wana play" thing the other dog takes it as aggression and snaps at him. It doesn't always happen but more times then I'd like. Then I get a "he's never done that before". Yeah right! So now I hold him back and warn the person "Buddy will try to playfully paw/jump on your dog".

See, I've never had that problem outdoors. Kananga is really only comfortable in his home. He's too alert outdoors and never wants to play. Every once and awhile though, he'll play with a dog he knows, but he'll only get so involved.

Buddy will run 100 yards to go play with any dog. When I take him to the dog park and we're walking from the car to the fenced in area he's so jacked up that when we get to the dog park fence I just lift him up and over and he just bolts right into the middle of the pack. When we are walking on leash sometimes he'll crouch down and wait for the dog to get close then spring up at them. He'll wear out any dog(s) at the park running around and around. People say "Wow, look at that Basenji, he's not even breaking a sweat"! :D
They're happy he's there as it makes their dogs run around where otherwise they may just be moping around. He'll stir the whole place up. He's quite a character. On the other hand I wish he was a little more hesitant/cautious about approaching other dogs for his own safety. With that, I keep him on a tight leash, only loose in the dog park.

Dan, your Buddy sounds like so much fun..We have got to meet for a playdate on day..somehow..LOL

I wish Kananga got more involved like that. He does show interest when he's on leash and wants to be with other dogs, but as soon as he approaches them he really just wants to check them out and say hi. Maybe he's trying to simply be polite, but when he's off leash at the dog park he's not very playful. I think he gets a bit overwhelmed with all of the humans standing around. He's always more comfortable around dogs than humans.

Oh well, I keep him socialized with as many people in my building as possible as it is. I think his personality dictates his behavior more than anything. :o

Otis and Buddy would have fun as Buddy would be all fun and no threat to him. He'll even go swimming if the other dog is in the water. The first day I took him to the beach I thought he might be a bit scared of the waves but no, right when we get there some dogs are running in after a ball and he runs right in after them- SLASH!
There's this little dog down the street, always in the front yard named Nacho. I think part Chihuahua and Rat Terrier or something. They have a metal fence that Buddy can get his head through. This dog loves Buddy and Buddy sticks his head in there, tail wagging a mile a minute and they're like hugging. The dog always whimpers when we go by following us in the yard as we walk. He usually barks at dogs that go by.

This discribes zoey exactly. the crouch and pounce and the wearing out of dogs. She ran 3 italian grey hounds one after the other into the ground and was waiting for the next dog to come along so she can still play. Also whenever a new dogs comes to the park she plays greeter at the gate. People are always amazed at how fast she is.

  • Play time is fun to watch, isn't it?

Buddy plays greeter at the gate too and goes to the gate when anybody leaves. Buddy will run around hard for 1 hour or more at the park then when we get home he runs in the house and grabs his toy.

My girl does most of the above listed things except that she does neck grab other dogs, but when she once caught and killed a squirrel, she grabbed and shook it, killing it immediately. Thereafter she was not at all interested in the prey and walked off. Another dog, a labradoodle, went over to grab the squirrel and started playing all over the field with it till its owner got it away from him. Shaye had no interest at all in this exchange because she did what she set out to do - catch and kill.

It's been a little over 3 months since Mr Baroo came to live with us and Karin and I are grinning most of the time because of the wild play times with Bitty. She had been developing a severe case of couch potato untul he came. Now every time they go out the back door it is at a dead run and Mr. B leads Bitty on multiple circles of their 1/4 acre yard. They are so awesomly beautiful when they run likle that.

When my guys were pups I would get on the floor on all fours and pretend to be a dog. Waggle my butt, take my hand(paw) and tap the dog on the head, scoot around on the floor etc.. My guys loved it. They must have though I was crazy, but the ran around and over and under me. I would sometime incorporate a toy and we would "share". Do watch out if your guy is a nipper and discourage that. If my boy would nip or get mouthy I used "ouch" command loudly and stop play.

@wizard: Has your beastie created a playroom like this? [image: 188.JPG] Love this picture! It's the same picture I could take of my own house…LOL! I have a bucket that the toys go in. I only wish-wish-wish that I could teach my furkids to put their toys away when they're done! Ha ha! Between dog toys and kid toys - It's insane! My son has finally learned to keep his stuff in "his" game room and shut door, but I am daily - pushing dog toys aside with my feet when walking thru the house! Ya gotta love 'em! :D
