• As Nakura 's results came back as a carrier I decided that I should test my two oldies at 15+. The certificates have now arrived and Ama, Nakura's dad is clear but Nakura's grandmother is tested as a carrier.

Her mother is dead but I assume she was a carrier too.

I am disappointed that Jewel is a carrier but delighted that Ama is clear as I assume and hope that those who have used him are too.

When I can afford it I intend to have our other 3 boys tested too.

I do wish we had the proper test!

  • You know, the fact that we have a test is the most important thing… and carriers are fine to use in a breeding program.. and we should us them.. obviously only on clears.

  • Well, at least you now know. Knowledge is power.

  • i agree with you i shall be glad when they have found the gene because at the moment its not just clear, carrier ,affected, but also ind and quite a few are comming back as that

I think that all of us breeders are hoping for the direct gene sooner than later… but if you consider the IND as a Carrier and breed only to a clear, you can safely breed... From the IND that I have seen that have been used, it seems they all would be Carriers judging by the results of the offspring

  • You know speaking as someone who used the very old tests (remember Brown and Bovee) and based on them bred to a dog that was fine (although later is mother died of Fanconi - so much for that test).

Or extensive pedigree research - this test is wonderful - it's not perfect but it is a million times better than what we had.

Exactly… and not only that... 99% of the results are what we would expect to see..... and that is certainly better the "I think" my lines are clear... what I find totally amazing is really how well responsible breeders have done with the information before the test...however if you look at the results from some kennels... we can see that in going forward without this test... Fanconi affected could have started to run at a much higher rate then we see now....so many have come back with Carrier after Carrier.. that without the test would have been bred and produce Affecteds...

So in the end, we are 100% better then we were before the test.. but again.. we need to be careful NOT to throw out the baby with the bath water

  • I know that quality breeders will keep the lines as strong as possible while making sure the pups are not affected. Really, that is all anyone can ask.
