Hi, all…
I'm Desmond, and I live in California with what I believe to be a basenji mix, Yoshi, who came from the South LA pound. Basenji-like, he loves to climb, get into trouble, play with cat toys, get into trouble, avoid water, race around the house, and get into trouble. Un-Basenji-like, he's figured out how to string his fox-yips together into full-on barks. Even though he's a mix, I've fallen in love with his standoffish ways and am looking forward to adding another B as soon as I can.
Here's Yoshi:

Welcome Desmond and Yoshi, are you sure he isn't a full Basenji?
He looks lovely and sounds mischevious. I'm sur you will enjoy this forum.:) -
Yoshi is adorable.. Welcome to both of you. Yes he looks like there is a lot of B in him, and sounds like it too..
-
Welcome to the forum, you'll find lots of great info here. Yoshi looks like he has quite a bit of basenji in him.

Welcome Desmond and Yoshi!
Yoshi seems to me really like a Basenji -
:)Hi there! Welcome to Basenji Forums!
-
He might be full basenji, though he's a little big (25 pounds), his coat and tail a little long, and he does bark along with the growls and the yodels–I even heard a "meow" out of him a few times. The shelter listed him as a shiba inu, of all things. At least I was already expecting him to be stubborn and self-contained.
-
Welcome to the forum. Isn't it great that the mixes get all that good Basenji behavior stuff! (-:
-
25 lbs is average for a male basenji, and our Foster Bana barks, only once ata time, never over and over like regular dogs..more like a big breath being pushed out of her. Either way Yoshi does seem to have a quite a bit of Basenji in him..looks wise and trait wise..you are lucky..
-
I'm lucky even if he were full-blooded rabbit (which I sometimes entertain ;)) since I'm crazy in love with him. He's managed to turn me from a full-grown man who never even thought about the well-being of my socks into a simpering basenji-slave within a month. I'm so glad to meet a community of dog owners who appreciate independence–not that you'd have a choice.
-
Welcome and I am with all the others sure looks like a basenji to me. Sounds like he acts like a basenji. I can tell you he is no Shiba I have had mine for a little over ten years. Trouble could be a name for the next basenji we get.

I love, love, love this post. Welcome Desmond and Yoshi. Do you own a monitor as well (varanus)?
-
I used to have monitors 'til they died of cancer (no, I didn't realize they could get cancer either). I'd love another, but savannahs are wild-caught usually and most captive-bred species won't fit in my apartment. I have to content myself with tegus instead. You can tell I like strong-willed jumping things that are smarter than me.

Thank you for getting your dog from the pound.
Its a wonderful thing… and welcome -
Thank you for getting your dog from the pound.
Its a wonderful thing… and welcomeThanks! I've already decided that my next fella, or more likely, lady is gonna be from rescue. I imagine that quite a few b's get sold to people who assume that a dog will, you know, want to please them.

Welcome! I have seen red and white Shibas that looked just like a long haired basenji. You could have a shiba-basenji mix, perhaps. He is a very cute dog, I see why you are in love. They are hard to resist!
For about $60 there is a DNA test if you are really curious…..
