Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Vet call me at work around 4:00 after discussing his still ongoing issues she asked me to bring in him after work. She re examined him, more x-rays. She is concerned he is still vomiting and agrees with me the force feeding should be a last option. So she hospitalized him overnight and is going to do IV fluids and nutrients. ( he had lost another 1 1/2 lbs in 3 days) Going to do a more intensive blood panel test, urinanalysis and possibly ultra sound in the morning. He had become dehyrdated again.

Poor baby.. but you did the right thing… and on fluids... They also make a doggy "ensure" product that you can get at petco or pet smart... once he is home... they are very high in calories

  • I can not believe all the things poor Cody has to go through…I hope the will find something concrete to tell you so you don't have to do this wild goose chase.

  • I hope Cody is all right I am very happy Cody is at the vet so find what is causing all the problem. Please try to rest and we all be thingking of you and waiting to hear. Take care.

  • Did they ever do the barium swallow to make sure that things are able to move through the digestive tract?

  • ivoss-my vet is not strong supporter of barium swallow b/c if they have to surgically open the digestive track open they don't like to have the barium in the system that could leak out.
They will do it but not a first choice option for them. They would rather do an ultra sound and endoscopy first.

  • Heard back from the vet this morning. Cody is more active since getting fluids etc. stopped vomiting, but still won't eat. All blood work red/white blood count etc came back normal. Urninanalysis showed a little high on proteins but they think that b/c he's dehydrated. Glucose came back normal. They are now taking the x-rays they took last night to the med-vet I took him to on wed. night to compare the x-rays and get a 2nd opinion. They also want to run a test for Addisions's disease. Has anyone heard of that?, have any experiance, or heard of a basenji having it?

  • very sorry to hear about Cody, hopefully the vet will now get to the bottom of it. What a worry for you.:(

  • Good news about Cody feeling a little better this morning. I have heard about addison's disease but don't know any about it. Keeping my fingers crossed that today is the day you get some answers.

I have to agree here… my vets are not fans of the barium either and will do ultrasound and/or endoscopy also....

Addisions is pretty uncommon for any dog to get….. Cushings would be more likely. However, very possible that there could be tumors on the adrenal glands... but for both usually you find that they drink loads of water (both with Addisions and Cushings), same as you would find with Fanconi....

  • I have heard of Addison's, as one of my B's has Cushing's disease which is the opposite of Addison's. Addison's is quite treatable, so you may want to hope that this is what is wrong. Lots of info. on Addison's on the internet. Hang in there!

I understand and that is my vet's first choice also but sometimes it is the only thing that will show a blockage. The other thing would be is there an ultrasound specialist in the area. My vet will do ultrasound themselves for many things but in difficult cases they will bring in a specialist because often times they will see things that others will miss.

My Vets are the same, while they do some ultrasound, usually they schedule a specialist once a week, if something is more of any emerency, then we go to the specialist. Lucky that we have two to choose from that are pretty close. Also, when we were trying to find Kristii's problem a few years ago (very similar to this boys problem), the barum did move through, however with the ultrasound they immediately saw the blockage and we knew surgery was needed asap…. Regardless, sounds like your Vet is on top of trying to get to the bottom of the problem.....

  • Update…My vet took her x-rays and drove over to the med-vet place I went on Wed night to compare her x-rays with theirs and to get the radiologist to give a 2nd opinion. Now its confirmed a small blockage in the small intestines, something peach pit size. My vet is doing surgery immeditately to remove it. Mystery solved. I am relieved that they found the blockage, just wish it was sooner. I am a little pissed at the med-vet b/c my vet had reapatly requested their x-rays for comparison and they didn't respond. She had to physically drive over herself and hunt down somebody.

  • So happy found what is going on. Let us all know how surgery goes. Will be thinking about the both of you. Life is going to get better now. Take care.

  • Good news, I hope this solves all his problems…poor little fella.

I can not believe she(the Vet) had to jump through hoops to get the films..typical.
Let us know how things progress. I'm keeping my fingers crossed his surgery goes uneventful and speedy..

  • Prayers and happy thoughts sent your way for a full recovery. Poor little guy, I hope he feels much better.

  • Surgery went well, even the vet is unsure what the object was after she got it out. He's currently in recovery, not entirely out of the woods yet. The intestines had not ruptured but maybe was damaged. He will spend at least another night and day in hospital for observation.

  • So far so good…I will pray for his swift recovery and for you and your husband to keep you calm..
So is it something he "found" and swallowed? Scary..

I'll just add this in case the testing doesnt give you answers. Anorexia exits. Although nearly ALL cases of dogs who do not want food has an underlying medical cause. But some dogs simply have anorexia. There are drugs that work very good for it..At one point they stopped making one type so we had so we had to switch. They increased Sayblees aggression. So from then on i handfed her. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/anorexia-in-dogs

@JENGOSMonkey, @elbrant, @tanza, @Kembe, @eeeefarm, @helle-devi Thank you all for the kind words, it has not been easy but this does help. We actually got his ashes back today and the place did a fantastic job, came back with ceramic paw print and all. It will last bring final closure, he is home. @helle-devi results confirmed what was suspected, IBD, for which we had already started his medications. I think it was just his time.

Hi Shelley – Poppy did the same when she was a puppy with her own and the other dogs offerings but she has grown out of it now with the exception of rabbit droppings and as Scott says cat droppings which most dogs seem to find irresistible!. We have been feeding Royal Canin with no problems, so it may not be down to that. It may be a family trait! Steve.

@kipper: Thank you to everyone for the great advice! Kipper is our second Basenji and the thought of loosing him at such a young age is horrific to us. Kip is currently taking metronidazole twice a day. I know the med does make him tired, but it's supposed to help get rid of his virus that in turn will bring back his appetite. I have tried all his favorites like cheese, sour cream and even homemade waffles. His diet is meat twice a day and free feeding of high quality kibble. The vet is very knowledgeable about Falconi and says all his levels are were they should be and the bicarb is all he needs. We will take Kip in again in 3 months for another blood test. Thanks again! Anna I don't want to doubt your Vet, But honestly, I find that hard to believe that he only needs Bicarb and not any of the Vitamins that are recommended in the protocol. If it were my dog, I would contact Dr. Gonto who developed the Protocol and run it by him and he is happy to talk to owners with Fanconi (it is Fanconi, not Falconi) about treatment along with conversations with your Vet. Also Thyroid testing is important for a dog with Fanconi. This would be the fill panel not just the one T4 level that are shown on regular blood work. Dr Gonto's contact info can be found at the bottom of the Fanconi Protocol information http://www.basenji.org/ClubDocs/fanconiprotocol2003.pdf Also you might want to consider joining the Fanconi Yahoo group for people with Fanconi affected dogs. They would also be able to give you good ideas since they are all dealing with dogs with Fanconi. It is a closed group for only people with affected dogs. If he was eating before the metronidazole then hopefully when he is done with that he will begin eating again.

My Basenjis do eat acorns with no effect at all. I do find that mine seem to know what they can and can't eat. I suppose each generation has learned from the last. Puppies of course have to be watched (like human babies) because they'll chew anything. Incidentally when I was a child (a very, very long time ago) i too used to eat acorns, - again with no ill effects!

yeah, I have had the same thing happen. One dose wont get rid of it. I really think it is making him snarfy as well. I will talk to my vet the next time I go in and do the Fenbendezol only from now on.
