Delicate question!

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • my basenji often falls asleep holding onto her 'lady part' ! Hmm
I have had her to the vet to check there is no infection - none.
I have smothered it in vaseline in case it was irritating - she just licked it off.
It doesnt seem to be seasonal.
Is it a habit? Do other dogs do it?
Or could it be symptomatic of something more serious?
    Thanks

  • Is she 'built properly' there? Just a thought. I know someone who has a dog who (okay, getting graphic here) has one of her inner lips protruding slightly outside, and she (the dog) is extremely aware of it. It is especially bothersome to her when she is around male dogs who sniff her there.

  • yes, looks normal to me :)

  • I know you can't know if she was weaned too early, but I have seen other dogs "comfort suckle" their toes or the ear tips of another dog. Does she make nursing motions with her mouth and tongue when falling asleep?

We had an orphan calf (years ago) that would seek out the first 2 fingers on any available hand to calm/comfort himself. He did this well into adult hood.

Not Robin, however if over all he is a good, well put together, good temperment dog, with light pigment, I would used the dog provided that you have a bitch that compliments him. Of course would be great to see stacked pictures of him.

Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

Who would have thought that worms were so interesting. My farm vet insists that dogs be wormed monthly but mine are on a weekly homeopathic wormer. I'm so pleased that Nahla has got rid of hers. And i accept what others have said about the possibility of a pup womitting up a worming tablet.

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

Oh, I am sorry about the loss of your b to cars. Sadly, when they get out, the are often not car smart. Hugs.

Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
