Duna changing color??

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi, my Duna on the top of her shoulder blades is changing color. She is shedding in that area and the hair is being replaced a lot more darker..like a shade of reddish chestnut. WHY?
If you need pics to get the idea, ill take some and upload them as soon as possible.
    Thanks….

  • I dont know why but our red/white basenjis also get a darker coat after shedding, I think the old coat is turns lighter because of the hairs dying and then falling out, the new living coat looks darker and will turn lighter when getting older as well, you can see that in a lot of dogs.

when the dark colour is concenctrating on only one spot and the whole new coat is lighter then I would like to see pictures ;)

  • our tri, jonny , did the same thing, but his black came in lighter. it seems to be less noticeable than when it first started. he shed A LOT as he had been outside before he was with BRAT.

  • In the summer my red/wht Ringo's coat would turn a dark orange red maybe from being outside in the sun a lot and the weather change.

  • Here is Duna's change of color on her back….
and 5 days later today..it's more extended along her spine and near the white line behind her neck...

  • Totally normal…

  • Shaye is also darker now than when we got her - it started with a darker chestnut down her spine, and eventually she got darker generally. At her shoulders she has a lighter area down both sides, and at the place where the white begins on her neck, she is getting more whitish hairs in the red - I think the color changing is a normal thing.

  • Hi!
I think you should not worry, it is normal, my 6months Mody did the same few weeks ago…I think her new coat is better and more shining.....

  • :) yes the new coat is definitly more softer and shinier!!!

  • That picture looks exactly like our Ella. My wife has been saying the last several days how "gingery" her back has been getting. And a month or so ago the area behind her ears became extremely light colored.

@maureen252 - You can add some wet, I do.... and also add some water with the kibble and wet food... I put in about a small tablespoon of wet. And some Basenjis do drink a fair amount... some of mine did/do some didn't

@khanis: I did check with Pam and she said that Oregon does not have a red hue at all. So, not sure what you were seeing, just bad lighting I'd guesstimate. I just want to clear up one thing. I DID NOT say that Oreo had a red hue. I said he looked brownish in a certain light and I could see stripes. There are many shades of brown and brown does not automatically = red hue. ;) (For example: Chestnut brown and blackish/brown - blackish/brown was what I saw at the moment I was thinking of.) I wasn't saying he had a red undercoat like the pictures from Dan, he has a black undercoat and it takes a specific light to see the stripes. Yes, you are most likely right - weird lighting, he could have also just been dusty. I was simply agreeing with the original poster, Dan, when he said he had seen their b&w look brownish. It isn't unusual to see black (in general on anything) look like other colours depending on lighting - many times it looks blue. ;)

@wizard: While cruising the new posts I came across this one and can't really offer any help (even if I am a biologist). However, I just had to say it made my head spin and my eyes cross :D (I remember now, that's why I had a hard time in genetics class!). haha ya i was like that at first. then i got into it a little more. maybe this other forum can help you, it helped me alot! :) we are actually still going at it! http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=8751&goto=newpost

Well, he's always licking himself down there… lol... I never really check to see specifically what he is licking, but now I'll watch him like a hawk..

Well his coat is finally coming in nicely and his shedding has lessened although still sheds. He loves his new food IVD especially since daddy heats it up for him. I guess it was the allergies and the season.

It really is a large loss. In loving our breed I find it pinnacle that we embrace it in all of its' natural color variations. Ivoss - thank you for the link, I went ahead and read all the letters and found it to be informative. I'll def. keep abreast. It's very exciting to think that with an open studbook to 50 or so new imports we could finally see some recurrence of the colors which have been so hastily discarded.
