Duna changing color??

    Hi, my Duna on the top of her shoulder blades is changing color. She is shedding in that area and the hair is being replaced a lot more darker..like a shade of reddish chestnut. WHY?
    If you need pics to get the idea, ill take some and upload them as soon as possible.

    I dont know why but our red/white basenjis also get a darker coat after shedding, I think the old coat is turns lighter because of the hairs dying and then falling out, the new living coat looks darker and will turn lighter when getting older as well, you can see that in a lot of dogs.

    when the dark colour is concenctrating on only one spot and the whole new coat is lighter then I would like to see pictures ;)

    our tri, jonny , did the same thing, but his black came in lighter. it seems to be less noticeable than when it first started. he shed A LOT as he had been outside before he was with BRAT.

    In the summer my red/wht Ringo's coat would turn a dark orange red maybe from being outside in the sun a lot and the weather change.

    Here is Duna's change of color on her back….
    and 5 days later today..it's more extended along her spine and near the white line behind her neck...

    Shaye is also darker now than when we got her - it started with a darker chestnut down her spine, and eventually she got darker generally. At her shoulders she has a lighter area down both sides, and at the place where the white begins on her neck, she is getting more whitish hairs in the red - I think the color changing is a normal thing.

    I think you should not worry, it is normal, my 6months Mody did the same few weeks ago…I think her new coat is better and more shining.....

    That picture looks exactly like our Ella. My wife has been saying the last several days how "gingery" her back has been getting. And a month or so ago the area behind her ears became extremely light colored.

    @tanza things have changed here, and not for the better. When I was first passed (by the Kennel Club) to give CCs the criteria was you must have had 100 dogs under you at open show level and have judged a club Open Show. Within a few years judges who had had less than 30 dogs under them in Opens were awarding CCs. Heaven alone knows what the criteria is now.

    No need to change the diet… unless you want to.... if he is doing well on what you are giving him, I would continue with that.

    Cory looked awful while she was blowing her coat. If she was a horse, she would have been described as a strawberry roan. A woman who was familiar with basenjis even made the comment that she'd never seen a basenji that color. She lost her winter coat from the bottom up…which looked even weirder. You could see the line of demarcation. It took forever to even out. I don't know why she felt it was necessary to grow that thick of a winter coat down her! She's been on Missing Link for months and even that didn't speed things up. (Or maybe she would have looked worse without it. :eek: ) She looks great now. Pat

    I am sorry to hear of your dog's possible Fanconi Affected status. I agree completely with Terry about waiting on the thyroid panel until he is stabilized on the protocol… and making sure if he does have a UTI, getting that under control as well. When you join the Fanconi list, be prepared that you will get tons of information, some of it conflicting. You will need to sort out what is best for your dog and you and his health. Do the protocol and hope for the best. Some dogs do very very well on it. Some do NOT tolerate it at all. I have two littermate boys with Fanconi, the one on the protocol was sick from day 1 and his body hated the protocol. His brother was sick on it, so we came to the conclusion that a better diet could make him feel better... and it did. He lived 4 years after diagnosis whereas the one sick on the protocol lasted about 2 years. Each dog is different. I lost my old Benny to Fanconi last fall and it was the most devastating thing I have been through in my life... I have helped my dog owners with their affected dogs and will continue to do so with the last few that have Fanconi Syndrome.     Really you should test at least monthly for Fanconi starting at age 3… but that is not to say that they can't start spilling sugar earlier.. And really in the beginning it is possible that if you are only doing it once a month and only one day, you might miss it all together.. I know a couple of Basenjis that only showed spilling sugar 1 out of 4 days in the beginning, so really best to do a few days in a row every month. Since the strips do not last long, no use is wasting them.
