Duna changing color??

    Hi, my Duna on the top of her shoulder blades is changing color. She is shedding in that area and the hair is being replaced a lot more darker..like a shade of reddish chestnut. WHY?
    If you need pics to get the idea, ill take some and upload them as soon as possible.

    I dont know why but our red/white basenjis also get a darker coat after shedding, I think the old coat is turns lighter because of the hairs dying and then falling out, the new living coat looks darker and will turn lighter when getting older as well, you can see that in a lot of dogs.

    when the dark colour is concenctrating on only one spot and the whole new coat is lighter then I would like to see pictures ;)

    our tri, jonny , did the same thing, but his black came in lighter. it seems to be less noticeable than when it first started. he shed A LOT as he had been outside before he was with BRAT.

    In the summer my red/wht Ringo's coat would turn a dark orange red maybe from being outside in the sun a lot and the weather change.

    Here is Duna's change of color on her back….
    and 5 days later today..it's more extended along her spine and near the white line behind her neck...

    Shaye is also darker now than when we got her - it started with a darker chestnut down her spine, and eventually she got darker generally. At her shoulders she has a lighter area down both sides, and at the place where the white begins on her neck, she is getting more whitish hairs in the red - I think the color changing is a normal thing.

    I think you should not worry, it is normal, my 6months Mody did the same few weeks ago…I think her new coat is better and more shining.....

    That picture looks exactly like our Ella. My wife has been saying the last several days how "gingery" her back has been getting. And a month or so ago the area behind her ears became extremely light colored.

    For the record, I'm not claiming to know the cause or reason for the behavior. What I did was give a prescription; Irrespective of what the problem or issue is, increased exercise would probably be a healthy way to decrease anxiety (whether it's seasonal, mood-related, etc.). If a dog has anxiety (about anything for any reason) then their need for exercise goes up; this is required to healthily decrease stress. Whatever the cause for the anxiety, a simple and (usually) effective way to deal with it, is through increasing exercise time and/or mental enrichment time. This also holds true for dogs with pent-up energy/restlessness/boredom/reactivity/etc. The posts directed at me were deleted, so I can't reply to them. All the best.

    My "aging" dogs are fed TasteOfTheWild kibble topped with a bit of wet food (variety of good brands) or a raw medallion (duck or pheasant) and with a fair amount of water so its kind of soupy (vet suggestion). Their weight hasn't changed and my vet is very happy with their condition. He also does a CBC every year on them for monitoring purposes, which I'm happy about. I'm real skittish now with essential oil usage. A couple of friends who are into that got me started using them on my dogs but mine started having bad reactions (Teddy's allergies went berserk and he scratched off a lot of fur before I got it under control again). I do use a botanical flea/tick spray but even there one has to be very careful - I tried one that had cedar and cinnamon oil in it and it caused weird shedding and scratching.

    I haven't studied coat colour inheritance in dogs, but from what I know of it in horses, you can tell quite a lot by looking at sire and dam and grandparents. Sometimes you can rule certain colours in or out, and determine probabilities of the colours you will get in a mating. Someone who knows more about dog colour genetics will be of more help. If an animal is homozygous for a trait, or heterozygous can sometimes be determined by knowing the colour of the parents…..

    No need to change the diet… unless you want to.... if he is doing well on what you are giving him, I would continue with that.

    I noticed that Daisy (a tri) is also having lighter colors streaked through parts of the black on her back and sides. This is her first whole year in life so this phenomenon is new to me too. Duke's black and white doesn't change, but I notice his shed is usually white.

    Really you should test at least monthly for Fanconi starting at age 3… but that is not to say that they can't start spilling sugar earlier.. And really in the beginning it is possible that if you are only doing it once a month and only one day, you might miss it all together.. I know a couple of Basenjis that only showed spilling sugar 1 out of 4 days in the beginning, so really best to do a few days in a row every month. Since the strips do not last long, no use is wasting them.
