Spinal Cancer or tumor

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Max's slipped disk may be more than we thought. He's not responding well to acupuncture or chinese medicine. The only thing that seems to help is Deramaxx (steroid) and that's not good for his liver. He feels really terrible when he's not using it. And it has gotten so bad he cries when he rolls over in bed. The new vet thinks maybe something worse is wrong. Has anyone else's B had spinal cancer or tumor? What were the symptoms and treatments? Were they successful?

  • One other question I forgot to ask - how quickly did the cancer/tumor start causing pain- was it gradual or sudden.

    Thanks for any input!

  • Oh, this is tough. I had a b who had back issues and would wake up screaming ever 1hr.
We tried everything to control his pain..even morphine patches directly on his skin.
We never could get the pain managed. We gave him peace of the rainbow bridge.
I am so sorry this isn't more positive.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

I just bought this. It really helped my Paolo, a r/w 5 years old I just adopted in August. His coat looks great and he looks and feels better. http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Only-Natural-Pet-Immune-Strengthener/999032.aspx

My Senja was diagnosed Jan. 18, 2014 with diabetes. After over 2 months on insulin and more tests she was still getting worse, losing weight, not eating and vomiting orange stuff. I took her to a more advanced Vet/Hospital and she had more test, x-rays and an ultrasound. The new vet found a large mass connected near the bile duct and pancreatic duct going to the stomach. He said it couldn't be removed. I tried some meds including the insulin for a few days then quit them all. She hasn't vomited and has been eating various foods and treats. She is still very thin and is now drinking lots of water. I'm wondering if I should give her insulin again if it would do any good. I know she doesn't have much time left, I just want her to feel as good as possible. I have a pain medication suspended in a gel to give orally when or if she seems to need it, but hasn't so far, it will make her sleep a lot. Guess you all know how heartbreaking this is and part of me wishes I would have gotten the second opinion right away in January.

I have never heard of this either, but it seems very rare, so my take on it, would be rather get my dog back if lost, then not take the chance because of a very rare case of cancer… Shoot, you get cancer just breathing the air now a days..

My wife's hand is worse where she can't bend her finger or lift objects. I finally got her to go to the doctor, they X rayed her hand and asked her how long she has had arthritis! So this is how she found out she has arthritis at age 48. It seems that her knuckle where she was bit has an inner infection, no broken bones, they put her hand & finger in a splint. The dog bite did not break the skin, but as any body who has been "really" bitten by a basenji knows they have bone crushing jaws. They leave horrible bruises even if they don't draw blood. The dog seems all better still, no more pain attacks. While petting him we noticed a scab on his ear after the fight. It goes all the way through his ear. The other dog bit a hole in his ear, when she tried to finish him!
