• I have been searching the forum trying to find out if there is a specific type of fleece that is best used in the crates for dogs; I remember somewhere reading something about if a dog shredded it that the fleece wouldn't cause problems like items with threads would (towels, other blankets etc) and I can't find a answer.

Does it matter if it's polyester made fleece (I know that most fleece is made from this)? Is Polar Fleece better? I guess patterns/colors are really up to me??

I know that it should NOT have the stitching around the outside, but is there anything else that I should be aware of?

  • I'm not sure. Two of mine will rip them up just to say they did it! Not necessarily to eat it, just the satisfaction (I think) of hearing it rip!

  • Hi

I've had really good luck with certain baby blankets made for humans - not really sure what the fleecy material is, but Beanie Babys are made from the same. I was able to let my girl have a blanket at around 5 or 6 months - my 3 1/2 month old boy likes to rip holes in them & pee on them, so he has to do without for now.

  • I don't dare put anything in the crates I put the dogs in when I leave to run errands. They'd entertain each other by shredding the item. I went through a lot of old sheets before I got that through my skull! Cory loves to have fleeces, baby blankets, or old towels in her bed at night and leaves them alone. Jayden can be trusted with nothing but his crate pad. Apparently he wakes up at night and decides he needs a fabric snack! So for me, it isn't so much the fabric as it is the dog and when they will be crated.

  • Blaze no longer gets anything in his kennel. He is a shredder just for the fact of shredding. However, one day, he got a nice long piece wrapped around his back leg and panicked. By the time we got home, he had lost the circulation in that paw. We had to cut the fabric off slowly, it was actually imbedded in his skin, then (thank god for 911) we put him in a luke warm bath and managed to get the majourity of the circulation back. Over a year later, it still has an indent, no fur grows there, and in cold weather, he can't walk on it.
It was a high pile stretch polar fleece.

Thanks for sharing - it's a good reminder that just because my basenjis do or don't do something one day, doesn't mean they won't switch it up the next! I've been lucky thus far with Trinity & the blanket in her crate - I think she's totally content with sleeping while we're away…but she still drags the blankets out every once in a while like they're toys. I once bought a fuzzy-filled crate pillow-liner thing for her crate - she just looked at it & said "wow! that's the biggest stuffed toy I've ever seen!" & went to town on it.

  • I use a Kuranda dog bed for Nemo in his kennel. He can't have anything in his kennel because he will shred and/or eat it. This has worked well for him. They make a version of it for crates (it's shown with a fleece pad in the picture but that isn't needed), so this might work if you have a wire crate. Gives them something comfty to sleep on but they can't easily destroy.

Thanks for this link, I looked at these a few weeks ago but lost the link, I am still considering them. I am wondering if my boy can go back to a wire crate; I had to put him back into a plastic crate because be liked to pee outside his wire crate - and he did it on purpose because once he went back into the plastic crate it stopped. I'd have to get a wire crate his size again too, not a problem though.

  • Here is a suggestion Tanza made a while ago for "bully pads"

I may have to look into these myself. Zoni is teething now and she ate parts of the zipper off of her fleece crate pad (she is in a plastic crate too). I guess the fleece is not far behind.

Thank I will look into those, I think I might get those, a bit cheaper than new crate and the other bed

  • I had been giving Dallas a couple yards of regular fleece in his crate. He would shred them sometimes but I assumed he wasn't eating the fabric because I always find tons of little pieces everywhere. I thought that until this past Saturday…

I was walking through the backyard & noticed a piece of his poop with a nice long piece of fleece wrapped around & in between it  So, not only did he eat the fleece, but managed to poop it back out. I was actually glad to see it because I have heard that fabric can easily cause blockages, leading to major problems. Needless to say, I don't think I will be putting fleece in his crate again anytime soon.
