Potty training

Basenji Training
  • Thanks for this thread…I had been wondering if I could handle getting a puppy next year! I think I'll stick to my old rule...no dog under 2 for me!

  • Another thing about when they pee when they are outdoors. Sometimes they don't let it all go at once. So that is why they need to go so soon after they just went - they still have some left. If you watch the pup outside, sometimes you can tell that they haven't fully emptied out. When you see that, you know that you'll need to make another trip outside in about 5 - 10 minutes. I found that if I was super vigilant, consistent and praise, praise, praise when outside - that really was the only way to stop Liyah (16 wks old) from going indoors.

It has been 2 weeks since Liyah has pee'd inside (she only ever pooped twice in the house and never did it again…not sure how I lucked out with that :D:D)...so hopefully it sticks :D. I think in my case it also helps that I have 2 adults that never go in the house, so Liyah has also learned from them.

Ha, ha, ha…the first week Liyah was here, I was wondering the same thing myself :D:D:D!!!

  • I do go out with her and yes she goes. She seems to poo two to three times and pee about the same. Once again this advice is great. Thanks to everyone who gave advice and to anyone who has anymore.

  • She should be peeing way more then two or three times…. sounds to me like she needs to go out more often.... baby puppies at her age will pee at least every 2 hours ... but mostly after sleeping, eating, playing.... and if playing... in the middle of playing if you take her out, bet she will pee....

  • Hate to be the bearer of bad news :p.

Ochre is now 10 months old. I had a hellish time toilet training her, I can tell you… We have housetrained plenty of dogs over the years, but Ochre has been the HARDEST one by a country mile .

I just couldnt get it to click with her at all. I dont know what was going on in her mind, the little rat bag :p . I would say she finally "got it", about 3/4 weeks ago. This was happening while living in the house with Saba, (he was a breeze, only one accident with him, and even that was the humans fault :D), who "asks" to go out, by running to the door, turning to look at you, and if you dont see him, he repeats this till you do. Bless him !!! Ochre finally caught on, and she now does the same thing :)

Schouiffy, you said, in a previous post, "Remember they dont go in the house to spite you", are you sure of this :p:D;) ???

  • +1 on the factor that she should be peeing way way way more than a few times a day. It's annoying, but fortunately they grow out of it in a few months. Again, anytime you feel she has gone out enough, that's normally the moment when she needs to go out again. It was a great rule of thumb for me and my dogs.

Saba, yeah, despite what we think… they really arnt spiteful..;)

  • She pees more than two or three times a day she pees two or three times everytime she goes outside wich is quite often. And She doesn't seem to have a problem with peeing in the house it is just the poo.

  • Gossy is 16 mos and she can only make it through 6-7 hours while I'm gone before she has to let go on the floor; of course she started out as a kennel dog (with outside access). I think potty training is a matter of consistency, consistency, consistency and patience, patience, patience.

And by the way, don't use a cleaner that has ammonia in it - that's an ingredient of urine and so will be an attraction for continued use of the area.

Sorry, I think that we all thought you were talking about pee, not poop… have you been able to catch her in the act?

  • Yes I have caughter her and I pick her up and say "potty" and take her back outside. I have even picked her poo up and taken it outside with us and let her watch me put it in the yard. Yet she still poos outside then runs for the kitchen and tries to go again.

  • Well, if you are cleaning the floors with a good cleaner, it sounds like its just a baby thing. Give her a few weeks to grow out of it, often puppy quarks are like that. Kudos for taking the poo outside and showing it to her, that worked well with my dogs.

  • Chaos has now gone two days without pooing in the kitchen. I doubt by any means this means she is broke of it, but I'll take any progress I can get.

  • Yeah! That is so exciting! My little girl is starting to get it too, slowly but she is getting it!

That was what I thought! That was my plan! Hard and fast rule even! But then I saw Shaye - and I know we'll live through this puppy stage - I think - I hope - please God!!!!!

  • Yeah I had a rule too, only older dogs from the rescue and now we have Chaos…..rules get broken.

  • Does a puppy have soft poop and as the puppy gets older the poop becomes more solid? It has been a while since I had a puupy so I can't remember.

No… a puppy should also have a solid poo...

@jkent said in 4 months old and difficult potty training: sometimes just looks at me when I give her the command to eat it, not understanding. She might be confused about the signals. Try eating a cracker while she's watching and then, setting her bowl down and telling her it's "okay" to eat. In the dog world, the boss (Alpha dog, or leader) eats first. Then the other dog(s) get to eat.

He does only poop in his crate, no urine usually. I am trying to gradually get him to like his crate, but I do think it might be a lost cause. But yesterday I left for about three hours and left him in the kitchen. When I got back, I opened the door and looked down to see not only my cat waiting for me but my dog as well… He found a way to get out of the kitchen and have the run on my apartment. I now know why basenjis are called escape artists. I was happy to find that although he had an accident in the living room, he didn't destroy anything. But I won't count on one time to trust him alone. I am going to stick with the kitchen and try to make sure he can't get out.

@agilebasenji: for this sort of thing (big value treats over long time period), the best thing i've found to use is frozen liverwurst. i buy it, slice it and put it in a small container (the leftover cream cheese containers work GREAT for this) then put the container in the freezer. the pup gets to lick the frozen stuff for her high value treat - LOTS of treat over a long time, but not lots of calories or lots of treats in the tummy. the dogs at my house swear liverwurst pupcicles are wonderful. sometimes they will try to nibble, but given it's frozen and in a small container, it's hard to get lots of treats. I will try this, but I myself love liverwurst. Hopefully I will not eat it all before getting to the park. At the park today, I was about 75% successful with the whistle/treat recall. Not bad for the first time out, I think. Especially because there were easily 20 dogs there, and Kipawa is Mr. Social and has to visit with all of them.

It's a natural puppy instinct to NOT pee/poo outside their "cove". This is to prevent predators in finding them with their smells all round the area. Sometimes it takes longer for some to go outside. A neighbor of mine got a puppy, and they too where having a hard time with pee/poo inside. I told them to just take it easy, and don't punish. Spend a good time outside, and award when he/she does go outside. It took until their dog was 8 months until he started going regularly outside.

Yes, my girl was well socialized. It's not that my voice is so startling to her. It's more that she doesn't like to be scolded and will find a way in the not too distant future to repay me with her opinion. Since I learned a while ago to not do this, I haven't suffered her wrath in some time but when I did it could be anything from finding she had peed or pooped just out of my sight to finding something I value that had just been totally shredded. I found that I could scold her reasonably for what she had done but then I needed to immediately reinforce my love for her so that she knew she didn't need to rebel against me. This has worked well for me. Shouting at her would always reap me a grim reward in the end.

@dmcarty: When mine are babies I do paper train them within the kitchen - then gradually reduce the amount of paper until just one section remaining. Then comes the interesting part - when they head for that paper - I know they need to go out. I also have a 'paper' by the door we use to go out to the dog yard - so head for paper - go outside - pretty quickly don't need paper at all as they go to the door. With adult dogs who know the 'door' I find that the puppies just follow and the previous generation teaches the new generation. (guess they only need me to bring the food) and they don't tear the paper? Geez, mine LOVE LOVE LOVE to shred paper. No paper on the floor is safe. I am amazed that yours leave it alone and actually use it properly!
