Gross, look what I found!!!

Off Topic
  • I was in the driveway yesterday and found a large, ugly bug. We had no idea what it was… beetle, roach, ???? We tried to find out by searching the web... No luck. Finally we asked a friend of ours who used to teach Biology. It is a Giant Water Bug and I just set it free about an hour ago! Disgusting creature, but fascinating... I'm glad it didn't get the chance to bite us or Bella (at first we didn't know it has a painful bite that can cause swelling and possible temporary - to permanent paralysis!!!). These critters can be around two inches long, yuck! Oh, and they have wings and can fly, eat other bugs and even small fish, and live in slow moving water.

Note: You could even find these bugs in your house if you let your dogs romp in ponds, lakes or pools. They will hitch a ride on animal fur and come right on in. Protect your feet, and check your animals well after they swim in ponds.

I know most of us don't let the dogs swim in ponds... but just in case!!!

  • These were all over when I lived in Delaware.
They scattered when I would turn on the lights in the middle of the night. At first I thought they were roaches and I was freaked out.
    Still, they are totally gross!

  • Ewww. Thanks for the information! Definitely a good thing to know, especially with summer coming up :)

  • WOW, I don't think we have them here. We have water skimmers but they look nothing like that. That looks like a roach on steroids:eek:

They are adorable :) Watson always gets identified as some sort of terrier. He has been a rat terrier and a toy fox terrier…

MacPack: that's hilarious! :D dmcarty: They did the same thing to Indians when they took the children away from the reservation and sent them to Carlisle, PA Indian School, among other places. If they were caught speaking their native language, they were beaten. I guess the method of teaching back then was if they won't learn it nicely, beat it into them. We've come a long way. Your Podengos are very pretty.

Where does your friend live? I do happen to have Portuguese Podengos and the big size HOWEVER I also have the only 2 in the US that are registered. I imported them directly from Portugal. That said - there is a guy in CA that has a few hunting stock not from Portugal but from the Azores - I have asked him for a picture as he also says they are Podengos - but didn't happen. The Podengo has a much narrower muzzle than this dog and does NOT have anything close to wrinkles on their forehead and their ears are up. A bit heavier than the Ibizan but same overall look. I would wonder about a Beezer and ridgeback or lab. And of course if you want to be bored with Podengo pictures go to my website that is under my name and click on the Podengo page.

I LOVE It's Me Or The Dog!!! She is awesome. She really lays down the law for people. Especially when the family pack order is all out of whack, which is often.
