Animal Hero is a basenji

Basenji Talk
  • Every day I try to remember to go to the animal rescue site to "click and give". Today I noticed that their animal hero nominee is a basenji in South Africa who alerted the owner to the presence of a large snake and herded the rest of the dogs out of the area. My two would be arguing over who was going to herd whom and the snake would leave out of frustration.

If you go to the site, notice the basenji in the background and what an interesting white marking it has.

  • Good b!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow, I click there every day but didn't even notice the Hero story. Thanks!

  • Too awesome, thanks for reminding me to click more often. I am proud of our breed and loved the story of the Basenji, he is such a hero!!!

  • Just last week I decided to sign up for the daily email reminders to click. Now I remember to click, but I missed this story too. I also got the cutest purple paw print pin free (minimal shipping charge).

  • I didn't know you could get email reminders, I am going to do that as soon as I get off of the Forums!!!

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Yep, we saw that one, too (the coffeehouse one). I'm guessing the animator or someone involved with the show has really good taste in dog breeds! :)

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

Actually, I think all the Breed All About its are 30 minute shows, so probably 22-24 minutes of content. We have done a search on any new DVR we have gotten and always keep it on there. One of our dogs goes crazy any time we put it on, it is hilarious.
