Not eating..

  • @soulmate:

did you check his teeth? and the skin in his mouth?
    Fingers are crossed!

    Regards,
    Esther

Yes, nothing to see or feel.. He also still chews his rawhide at night..

  • I hope you find what is making Tillo feel ill. Don't be surprised if once on the mend he doesn't want to eat any of the foods that he was eating when he started to feel sick. When my cat became ill and eating made him feel worse, when we finally got him turned around and doing better we couldn't feed the same food anymore, he would refuse. Even foods with the same protein source were snubbed for quite awhile.

  • I would stop the rawhide until he is better.
    What did the vet say?

I haven't called the vet yet. Will do that tomorrow. He ate some kibble tonight, so I'm happy with that..
About the rawhide, I don't know if it can really harm him? He's chewing it once every few days.. not really eating it..

  • I don't give my dogs rawhide anytime, but that is just me.

I hope I can feed him raw again, but first things first. I don't really care what he eats.. I just want him to eat and gain at least 2-4 pounds

  • I hope you find out what's bothering Tillo. It's good that he ate some tonight.

    I buy from a special brand: http://www.farmfood.co.uk/rh_additional_info.htm
    They have very good rawhides.

  • I've always had problems with Apache and food. Whenever he used to snub his food I found that some boiled beef or chicken would get him eating again.

  • I don't have any words of wisdom…just wanted to say that I hope Tillo starts feeling better! :-)

  • I know most of these discussions come down to poo, but I'm sure the vet will probably want a stool sample too. I hope he doesn't have some sort of parasite.

  • How old is Tillo now?

Dallas went through a phase right before he turned a year old, around 10 months or so, where he would pick at his kibble but essentially not eat much. He has since started eating again & licks the bowl clean. I have been told through puppyhood they can go through spurts where they eat tons & then spurts where they don't eat much at all.

Hope it's just a small spurt & that he's not ill! Keep us updated!

  • hows Tillo doing now janneke??

geef hem een kusje van ons…. arme knul.... :)

    He just turned one ;)

He had a good day today! He ate all his kibble! I decided not to call the vet. I hope he will eat some of his raw tomorrow.. but maybe I'll wait an extra day or two.. Now he just needs to gain weight again :) But I'm sure he will now he's eating..

Sometimes it's enough to only post something.. really weird.. I hope it continues this way, thanks everybody!

  • I used to have boys that would stop eating and get thin when females in the neighborhood were in heat.
Glad he is eating and hopefully he will gain back his weight soon!

@JENGOSMonkey, @elbrant, @tanza, @Kembe, @eeeefarm, @helle-devi Thank you all for the kind words, it has not been easy but this does help. We actually got his ashes back today and the place did a fantastic job, came back with ceramic paw print and all. It will last bring final closure, he is home. @helle-devi results confirmed what was suspected, IBD, for which we had already started his medications. I think it was just his time.

The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

My Basenjis do eat acorns with no effect at all. I do find that mine seem to know what they can and can't eat. I suppose each generation has learned from the last. Puppies of course have to be watched (like human babies) because they'll chew anything. Incidentally when I was a child (a very, very long time ago) i too used to eat acorns, - again with no ill effects!
