So much fun to work with them

Basenji Talk

  • When we're sailing, my biggest job is our animals :)

Buana has to be fully trained, not just for shows, also for the casting and his job as social dog.

Every day I train a little bit with all three of them.
One of a time, I'll take downstairs (they're with us in the wheelhouse)

Buana begins with a big yodel, he likes it soo much..
He knows very much commants and trics and i'm a bit empty of ideas.. so now i'm teaching him from a distance, about 6meters away.

It's so nice to work with him because he likes it so much :D
He don't want snacks as a treat but he wants a hug… (crazy boy)

I've a whole list of things he's doing good..

    • Sit
    • Lie down
    • Flat on the floor with his whole body and head
    • Paw
    • Other paw
    • High five with botd paws
    • Higfive with one paw
    • high five with the other paw
    • Make a Bow, and stay till i say, free
    • come stand in front of me
    • Come stand next to me
    • Stand on two legs
    • Walk with me, trough my legs
    • Wave at me
    • Brush his head with his paw
    • Sit/Lie down and wait
    • Follow me
    • Roll over
    • Get me some toys
    • Touch, as I say touch, he touches my hand and so I can learn him so much
I think I'm forgetting a few trics...

    From a distance Buana can:

    • Sit
    • Lie down
    • Lie flat
    • Wave at me
    • Brush his head with his paw
    • Make a bow

He never wants to stop training, but after ten minuts I say it's enough and i'm going to play with him..
If I say "i'm going to get you" (or in dutch Ik ga je pakken!!) he's going to run across the room so I can chase him, after some big idiot acts from buana he jumps at the sofa so I can GET him... I give him a hug and pick him op to go to the wheelhouse (thats just one stairs up ;))

Chafuko is more of a naughty one,

    He gives his paws,
A hig five with one paw
    he sits, lies down
    he follows
    he knows "touch"
And so funny is the twist!
He stands in front of me and I say Twist! than he makes as quick as possible a twist, with his little brindle but half in the air... hahahaha

Hailey knows sit, wait and lie down, much more I didn't practice yet. First she has to be fully happy, and herselve again.. I think that's almost now.
Yesterday I did some show training, and WOW she's so pretty :D
A little bit too happy but i don't mind that!

Are here some B's too that like to train??

  • What a great story, I can picture the pups now, out on the boats!

    thank you so much!:D

  • you know mine do :) well at least Kalusha & Thirza like to train tricks :)
Jenson cant be bothered, and Lio neither hahahaha

  • I've only just started to work with my new one so i don't know how he will do. But my previous one would do only the simple things.

Buana have you tried to teach them to dance, since they like to do so much?

  • @Buana:

    • High five with both paws

    High…ten?

    :p

  • @mauigirl:

    High…ten?

    :p

    :D :D

Tillo loves to practise.. favorite trick: Kiss :D
And it all has to go in a hurry.. because he doesn't like to stand still and wait.. or the 'wait' has to be a commant

An idea for Buana.. Let him sit and stay.. walk away.. call him to come and while he is comming, tell him to wait. He has to stop walking and sit or lay down. We are training this with Tillo and he's pretty good at it :D

@condesa said in How much puppy exercise?: Thanks so much! Makes me feel better. And I got her from Nocturnal Kennels in NC. Are the sire/dam DNA tested for Fanconi and PRA? Did you check for yourself at www.ofa.org as DNA tests for Fanconi/PRA are public posted for the results. If not you should have your girl tested. It is a cheek swab that you do yourself. You can order it at www.ofa.org and the cost is 65.00 for each test (Fanconi & PRA)

LOL on the entire repertoire. That was my chow/coyote. I would just wait til she stopped and give THE command (or give it again if she started AFTER I had given it.. but most of the time she started the second she knew I had a treat) when she was ready to listen. But it was cute.

When I got each of my b's I brought them into my office as little babies - I didn't want to leave them home alone when they had just been through such a big change (they are a year apart - each one came into my office for about the first 4 weeks after they came to live with me). They were so easy then because they slept so much. Although they are very different personalities, they are basically the same in my office. Sweet and sleepy as babies, total nuts as adults. I bring one or the other in occasionally and can't leave either one off-leash. They hit every garbage can in the place, and would run out the front door (and have) when anyone comes in. Too curious. All they want to do is walk down Main Street and smell all the other doggie smells, so there is lots of whining and boredom on their part, but they are welcome as long as they don't do anything destructive. (My boss has actually put up with a fair amout of that from other dogs in the office). So I do have a dog-friendly office, it's just that my dogs are not easy in the office.

It is really great to be able to bring your dog to work. I've been bringing Sol to the gym for the last two weeks, and he is amazingly gentle and tolerant, even with toddlers– I am careful to tell people who fall in love and say they want a basenji that he is unusually tolerant for the breed, and that they need to pick their dog carefully---- I will try to take a picture too. Jill… I know exactly what u mean they dig in and its no pudging... Sandie is so strong and her paws which i call hands grip like a vise... I was thinking soon as this puppy food is gone im switching to adult... she isnt picky as long as she has food she dont care what it is...I know shes a mix and a mix of what i dunno... but i hope she has stopped growing...Shes 6 months old now so my next trip is to have her spayed.. this worries me also... last female i had spayed gained weight...
