I believe this was one of THE most useful pieces of advice and games another dog owner had given us when it came to our puppy recall…. One day at the dog park I was talking to a man - owner of a Visla, about his dog recall and he went into a story about how his dog took off after a rabitt. He made a game of it and decided to hide on his dog, in which it took his dog 30 minutes to find it's owner and since that day his dog obeys his recall. We are lucky enough to to live in a building where there is an underground car park that is capable of holding 100 cars, but in our case there's only 6 cars, so we always play hide and seek on our B, especially after walks when his recall was poor. And because of playing this game, we have a dog that will come to us 80% of the time. We are still working on the 20%, but I'm happy that at 8 months he comes to us when we're out of site at the enclosed dog park. Now, if only I can trap a squirrel in the car park and put Kairoe to the test! lol. j/k [kind of] :o

I also thought of the heart worm pill iverheart and the frontline for fleas and ticks. would that bother them? i gave them the flea /tick over a week ago and the heart worm on the first…. other than that, they are pretty well watched 24/7. not a lot of chance to get into something. weird. i grew up with german shepherds. they were outside dogs, and very low maintenance. but so very loyal and independent. so this is very different. just want our babies to feel great and be happy!

My cat was here for nearly 15 years before I got my B puppy. The puppy of course wants to play, and the cat hates her with a passion. The cat stands her ground and growls, hisses, spits and goes after Shaye with claws raking - the one thing that perhaps is going to save my B is that she is learning the "leave it" command, and is starting to ignore the cat when I give the command. They will never be friends, but eventually I'm hoping the dog ignores the cat through the "leave it" command. The command is even beginning to save my couch, pillows, chair legs, etc., etc. - keep at it!

In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
