I've hunted deer with my basenji in emergency situations during archery season. She has helped me find several wounded deer in the woods after dark. Basenjis are easily distracted by other trails and other deer scents so you need to make them associate the smell of deer blood with getting a raw venison treat. My basenji found a deer for me the first time I tried it with her. Most dogs need extensive training for this but she picked it up in 10 minutes. She has helped me a great deal. If there is no blood on the ground however it'd be tough depending on the wind direction, and they usually get distracted by diverging deer trails if there is no blood to follow.
Hi from Sydney Australia
-
Just found this site while Googling Basenjis. We don't currently have a Basenji as ours passed away last February. I was thinking, again, of our beloved Basil Basenji today and I'm thinking we might be just about ready for another. We are in Sydney Australia and Basenjis aren't too common around here, there are only a couple breeders in Sydney. I got Basil as a "free to a good home" when he was about 5yrs old and I had him for the next 9yrs. We miss him terribly. I'm keen to hear from any other Basenji owners from Sydney who might be able to give me some advice on finding a Basenji pup.
Thanks

Thanks Janneke.

Welcome to the group! There are a few Aussies on here who are active, I'm sure they would help out.

Welcome to the forum!
The first breeder in Australia that springs to mind is Tamsala (google it), just because I've stumbled onto that website before. I'm not sure about rescue resources…good luck and keep us updated.. -
Wazazi (http://www.wazazi.com/) is in NSW. Tamsala (http://www.tamsalabasenjis.com/) is in North-eastern Victoria.

And there is http://www.kanibaru.com/ Another good breeder. There are quite a few, but I know that Australia is a very big country, so many might not be close. You can also find breeders at http://www.basenjifiles.info/ from all over the world

Thanks everyone. I found one, Zandeena, which is close to Sydney. I'm going to give them a call.

They bred a Baagna x Baagna litter this season. And Baagna basenjis is also in Sydney I believe.. http://baagna.com/

Looks like they did have a litter, it is too bad however that they didn't DNA test for Fanconi before they bred the litter, as none of the parents have been tested either.

I am always surprised to read about breeders not testing before they have litters.
Just makes sense to me. -
