Who's driving this bus anyway!

Basenji Talk
  • The last couple of months Samantha is getting a bit choosy about the routes we go on for a walk. When she disapproves with the way that I'm heading, she'll just stop and lay down - sometimes in the middle of the road! If I turn and go a different way, she'll follow. Other times she'll continue on with a little nudging. But if she's really got her mind set on not going the way that I intended, she will absolutely not give in!

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, what do you do about it?

I thought today maybe I'd have to start bringing treats with me to get her to go where I want her to when she gets stubborn - but is that just rewarding her for stopping?

  • Has something happened on the route she doesn't want to go?
Hot pavement, bad dogs behind fences…something?

  • Fiji will give in, but she has definitely been testing lately, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with bad experiences on any of our routes; feels more like she's testing to see who's in charge. Is that likely, or just my imagination? What's the best response?

    Thanks for bringing this up.

  • Yes, get her and your new boy into obedience and work to earn with treats, and getting up on the couch by you…
    it will help.
    Hugs

No problems, lets me learn for future reference which is always a good thing :) Kaia is still petite. I haven't weighed her in about 2 weeks or so, she had been hovering just a smidge under 18 lbs, she may have finally gone over that now. That's why I was hoping to put off until July, wanted to make sure she had plenty of time to grow because we weren't too sure if she grows slowly or if she'll just stay petite. But I look back on her first pictures with us and wonder when she got so big!

I had nose surgery a few months ago and when I got home I was worried the dogs would be so excited and jump all on me, but it was crazy how mild mannered and dare I say tame/domesticated they were. I swear they knew I was hurt and gave me a day or so of good behavior. They are truly great dogs to own!

My pup never bothered hers much and I didn't even use a spray deterent. (Of course she got used to wearing coats in the winter so maybe that helped.)

There's no animal so resourceful as a hungry basenji. They were slighted you know for centuries being last in line at the cooking pot.
