A bit of bragging about the boys

Basenji Talk
  • Since we had the Basenji meeting with Janneke (and mirtillo) and Walter (from Bendji) Buana has changed… :)

He is three years old now, he never was friendly to other dogs.
He growled and even snapped when the other dog was growling back.

Since we had the meeting, he seems changed in suc a nice way!
Buana hasn't growled at one dog, we let him on a loose leash and he will go to the dog, smell a bit and even sometimes play! (all that on the leash!)

Last week, I walked the dogs with my mom, my mom had Chafuko and I had Hailey (she was at the end of her period) and Buana, there came a dog (black lab, competely male) on a short leash and I thought... oooo no...
Was to late to keep Buana away, he smelled and both were so calm and easy and after a few minuts we walked on... I was so proud on my boy...

I think he made more than 10 friends now.. and the nicest thing : he can walk off the leash!!! Together with Chafuko!!!!
When there are no cars in the area, we let them run free. When they walk too far, we call "wait a second" and they will stay still untill we say " freeeee"

Also Chafuko is back as normal again, when Hailey was in her period, he was not nice to other dogs...
I'm happy he is as sweet as always... :D

They're both sooooo sweet.. I love them!!!!

And Hailey, she act like shes a very angry dog to other dogs... but when they stay coming closer, she's going to stay behind us hahahahahahaha

  • That is wonderful that Buana is friendly now. He just needed to see that other dogs are PLAYMATES, not enemies! Congratulations!

  • Good news - and I'm sure you're happy too.

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

Don't feel bad about getting bit…she probably was sorry as soon as she realized what happened. Darting movements can garner such a reaction from any animal (and some humans) when they aren't used to contact. Chasing a Basenji, even when you really need them to come to you (sometimes especially when you need them to come) quickly becomes a game and they will play tirelessly. You could try a training exercise wherein you have really good cookies in your hand and call her just to give her a cookie. It won't take long for her to come to her name if she associates it with something good. Don't give up.

That's great to hear all went well for you - sounds like you had a fantastic time! We don't have a dog park in my area either & I really hope we find one on our road trip this summer. About the hotel inspections - be careful with that - I'm usually up my female's rear end because I have little trust that her curiosity won't get her into trouble. The first time we stayed @ a "pet friendly" hotel, my B was able to find some random black debis on the chair, stuff under the beds & 2 prescription estrogen pills! I had just had her spayed, but she certainly didn't need all that!! ;)

Trixie has started pulling on my husbands and mine shirts in the same way. I have not been bitten lately but she is just so weird sometimes!! Trixie seems to like to have the entire family in the living room and all attention on her!
