• Hi There! I just had Lenny neutered a week ago. They did the laser procedure and he did not need a collar! He mostly slept when we got home and did not even try to lick his wound. I'm not sure, maybe it was because he was so loopy from the meds that he just didn't notice.

I waited a week to take him back to the dog park. He really seemed back to normal within a day or two, but because the wound still has to heal, I figured it was best to wait longer. I think walking would be fine though. I just wanted to keep him from the all out B500s he gets into at the park. We went yesterday for the first time and he was just fine…..

    Good luck!

  • When we had Keoki neutered in November, we didn't even get a collar {we could have, but chose not to}. We didn't get one when Jazz was spayed last year either.

It was not a problem. Aside from a little licking, he left the wound alone almost completely. The surgeries now are so different than they used to be. Ask your vet if you can skip the collar, leaving the option open to come back and get one if your boy bothers the wound too much.

The vet will probably advise you to keep your boy calm for about ten days….good luck with that, LOL.
I'd stick with short walks just to go potty for the first few days, then maybe begin longer walks -- let your dog guide you on when he's ready for that.
I'd avoid the dog park until he is completely healed.

  • I have never used a collar.. just an added expense.. and you can make your own… if need be.. I made one for Kristii when she had surgery to remove a liver tumor and was "split" stem to stern... I just used a piece of stair tread (hard rubber that you can buy at the hardward store used to put on steps to keep from slipping), covered in a old fairly large hand towel, wrapped in duck tape and then wrapped around the neck, kept on with Vet Wrap.... worked great...
As far as keeping him quiet... usually by day 2 you would never know that he had surgery... I agree with avoiding the dog park for at least a couple of weeks.

  • Thanks for all the good information. I am going to try not to use the collar and see what happens. But think I will bring it home with me just incase.

Well we are off to the vets….........

    Again mahalo(thanks)

Probably too late, but, you can NOT bring the collar home and go get it if you need it.
That way, if you don't need it you don't pay for it.

  • I thought I would let him come home with the collar on (its only $5) and if he seems okay then I can take it off.

Question how long does it take to heal? The vet I have does provide alot of information I have to go with questions. After this we are looking for a new vet, not that she isn't good but I hate being nicholed & dime for everything little thing….....

Thank you all for your great information.

Much depends on the dog, as with recovery from anything for any living creature, but I'd expect 10 - 14 days before I'd say he's "recovered".
Still, you're very likely to seem him back at normal behavior in just a few days. You don't want to push it though, so keep it slow and easy as much as possible for that two weeks or so.

  • Not only is there variation from dog to dog but also depending on the procedure actually used. Different procedures have a faster recovery time than others, like laser surgery, etc.

  • Aloha,

I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. Jaberi is doing fine back to his old devil dog antics again…......

    again much mahalo.

  • Totally unrelated. Jabari, I can't tell you how it warms my heart to hear "aloha" and "mahalo". Oh warm and fuzzies 🙂 My family is still on Maui as my little sis is only in high school.

Our Riley is getting the big snip in probably about 10 days. Poor little guy. I think it's the non-laser kind. We haven't had a comprehensive exam w/ the new vet yet but she comes highly recommended from a breeder out here. I just wish she accepted AKC's comped vet visit certificate you get for registering 😕
