Can Kong Toys be toxic?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Similar to kid's toys from China, recalled for toxic chemical & lead contents, what about the dog toys that are made in China? I know the Kong Chew Toys smell really strong for a long time, and I would never let my grandchild play with one. Anyone know what they're made of? Are they safe for our Basenji's? How would one go about checking the Kong Toys out for safety?

  • I'm trying to be a responsible dog owner, & want to know what Kongs are made of, including the red & blue dyes. The link you sent doesn't say any of that, and the Kongs do really smell strong. My friend's dog got very ill from Ecoli on one of those rawhide chews. And who would've thought that the coloring on those baby bottles contained lead? So, I'm still looking for the contents so I can make a responsible decision, since my dog likes to chew them. I wrote the company, but they never answered. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!

  • The strong smell that the Kong has is from the rubber that it is made of. The reason I sent the link is because it does say that all Kong products are manufactured in the US not in China.

  • @lvoss:

The reason I sent the link is because it does say that
all Kong products are manufactured in the US not in China.

All Kong products are not made in the U.S., some are made in China.
I emailed Kong Company, LLC asking them for the ingredients. They said some of their products/toys are made in China. Some are made here. But they were vague about my questions, and didn't list the ingredients. Awhile back, my other dog's nose turned green. Turned out to be from the rubber dog food bowl. I changed bowls, and its nose slowly became normal. So, I'm going to keep looking.

  • I always have used Stainless Steel bowls… and for water also.

  • If you are concerned about the coloured Kongs, get the black ones…no dye in those. The smell is natural rubber....rubber has a strong odor.

And actually, from everything I've read on the internet (granted you can't believe everything you read), the regular Kongs (that sort of resemble snowmen :D) are made in the USA...

Maybe it is the other stuff they make that isn't made in the USA?

Oh, and like Tanza...I too use stainless bowls for food & water.

You guys are great - thanks for the responses. We are most often dealing with high humidity (being on the coast), so 80 degrees can feel much warmer. I think I will use 75 degrees as Kipawa's upper range. Also, the heat yesterday came on with a bang - no buildup to it. It just happened. So there was no time for man or beast to get used to it. Anne, your comment about "a dog will keep going with you till they collapse from heatstroke" is exactly what would happen to Kipawa. He just loves his outdoors and running so much. Once outside, he does not have a "slow" setting if he is off leash.

@thunderbird8588: Thanks for the reminder Dan. We have a problem with blue algae at our local nature reserve and around Preston docks. Obviously we don't allow Malaika to go near and i try to discourage her from drinking any water other that what comes out of a tap. I know I have to keep Buddy pulled back from any standing water as he'll take a sip even though I carry bottled water for him on our walks. You don't even want them to get their feet in it as then they'll lick the foot and may get sick.

Tanza: Until the late 1700's, people who ate tomatoes without dying were considered to be witches. European wisdom at the time was tomatoes, while a pretty plant, were poisonous. They had to be because they look so much like Bella Donna. That's why the immigrants of the time thought Indians were magical: because Indians ate tomatoes and peppers all the time. There isn't enough of the active ingredient in any of the foods you feed your kids to hurt them. Since you peel your spuds, you have nothing to worry about.

@BasenjiMaya: Thank you for the help. I really appreciate everyone's input. Our plan is to have her spayed so we'll see if the vet can take care of the hernia then. (We'd love to breed her, but I just don't think we would be able to put in the care and planning with breeding. But Basenji's are so adorable, it's hard to say no to breeding.) It is pretty simple to have it fixed with spay… and as far as breeding there is lots that goes into it along with planning and care..and finding the right homes and being prepared to care for those pups for their lifetime... especially money.... so I think you are making the wise decision

@Janneke: Yeah, thought about it.. I think it's from a plant. I believe it is cald hogweed in English. We were at training this morning (yes, again the training) and they grow there. Could well be that it was the hogweed as I have heard of it irritaing humans skin and causing blisters.

Well his coat is finally coming in nicely and his shedding has lessened although still sheds. He loves his new food IVD especially since daddy heats it up for him. I guess it was the allergies and the season.
