• Hi guys, was wondering what the deal is with my 5 month old female's ears. The inside of her ears are a little 'rough' in texture and she seems to be breaking out a bit and they also seem a little dry. I'm assuming it's an allergic reaction to something (at least that's what it LOOKS like) and was thinking of putting a little Benadryl cream on them. Any ideas or thoughts? I've never seen this before on any of my other dogs….it doesn't look TERRIBLE but it's got me a little concerned. Any help would be appreciated!

  • Do they itch her? Is she shaking her head or pawing at them? Are they red? It is not uncommon for puppies to get ear infections.. for whatever reason.. (I always thought it had to do with teething)… If they are not seeming to both her, I don't think I would be too concerned...

Well, Pat, that's the thing. They're not red, and she's not even aware they're there! They look like little pimples and are a bit raised and rough to the touch….but not red.

  • I think that I would just keep an eye on them and see what happens… not sure I would do anything at present... but that is just my opinion

  • Can you get a photo to post?

  • thanks guys, I'm gonna just do a wait and see. It's really nothing terrible, just a little odd…

  • A little update on the 'rash'…...seems to be going away. I noticed this morning the 'bumps' were a lot smaller, feels less rough to the touch too. Makes me think it was some allergic reaction to something.....

  • Thanx for the update. Did you change food recently, or are you thinking it was an alergic reaction to something she got into?….....Glad to hear it's clearing up. :)

Well, I guess it could be almost ANYTHING because I've only had her for a week now! She probably had it when I got her…..I'm keeping her on the same food she's been eating etc...

Hi Tommy, My Basenji has that from time to time. Not inside, just on the ear flaps. Some people call it Winter Ears, but I'm not sure what the name of this problem is. Tried many things, but here's what worked for me. Thoroughly cleaned outside of her ears with ear cleaner from a pet store. Let dry, then used olive oil daily until it cleared up. Let me know if that works for you.

What is she eating? Many times they develop allergies to food over time…. especially if there is corn or lots of grains/fillers in them

  • Oh Hi Pat . . . Yes, allergies to something. She eats Lamb or Chicken & Brown Rice. No corn, other grains or fillers. Hates pet store snacks; we cook fresh chicken to use as treats. She had the ear rash when we got her, but they didn't feed her corn, other grains or fillers either. She gets it 2-3 times a year and it's a pain. Doesn't itch or smell. Looks bad, gets black, crusty, tender on the edges. DermoVets don't know either.

  • Lamb can sometimes be the cause of allergies…. in some dogs...

She was eating Pedigree puppy food when I got her. I'm slowing weaning her off and into Solid Gold…....

Yup, it's just on the inside of the flaps. It's going away VERY slowly. I'll try the olive oil treatment…...thanks!

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@obi1 said in Ear Rash. Dog Ear Vasculitis: Do you know of better ear muffs? Obi, I saw a funny looking knitted cap that might fit over Basenji sized ears on etsy.com. I think it would help prevent the ear edges and tips from becoming frostbitten. The shop seems to focus on Cats, but the owner appears to be willing to do special orders. Worth a try....

Poor baby. Also from now on, in addition to the benadryl, I'd give the rabies separated out from the combo and skip the Lepto. Check with your vet and do your own homework about the Lepto though. (But no sense in overloading the immune system with a bunch of vac's at one time.)

@tanza: Could also be a reaction to some kind of bite… here is another thought... when did he have he last round of shots? But in the end, I think I would take a trip to the Vet... could just be a little ear infection going on... they can and do get yeast infections in the ears.. and I have found that puppies for what ever reason get dirty ears... and slight infections. Kobey had one when he was about 4/5 months old... His second round of puppy shots he got on the 7th of this month. His next round isn't until the 6th of March. I am going to call the vet this afternoon & ask them if we should bring him in. His ears do get really dirty with wax buildup. I have actually used a q-tip (he's gotten a little better) & cleaned them almost every other day in the past week because everytime I look down there I see some buildup. Maybe that itself is another sign that something more is wrong. I will check his paws & rear tonight for any signs of an allergy but I examined him a lot last night (after noticing his ears) & didn't see anything else out of the ordinary.

The dogs in the picture look so much wilder to me. I liked the smaller ears. also they talk about the dogs had short muzzles. Very cool pictures, thanks for posting the link.
