Collar Help

Basenji Talk
  • I have decided to get Medjai a new collar and need help deciding. I have gotten down to two collars from allhoundsapparel. I love the guarantee that covers chewed collars. I have to decide between a 1.5" martingale collar or a 1.5" hound collar. Then I have to decide between the closures.

These are the two I'm looking at.

Both look good, but which is better?

  • **I like the bottom one better!
But I am a HUGE fan of Nick Russell's collars.
    They are durable and pretty.
I have used Nick's collars for 10+ years and they last forever
and his collars are the only one I use.
I send a Nick collar home with all my puppy people.

Probably cheaper than the website you listed.
    http://members.aol.com/k9collars/ Here is Nick's.
I only use the Martingale collars, which is called safety choke design in
    Nick'e website.
    Email Nick for new designs.**

  • I agree with Steffie, My "Nick" collars are over 6 years old and I am going to replace them soon, just for variety. And the safety-choke absolutely prevents a basenji getting out of them when they are pulling. They fit loosely so can be slipped when the dog is just hanging around, but not when they pull. The collar gets snug, but you adjust how tight you are willing for it to get so the dog is never really choked. Nick has other styles as well, but I swear by the safety-choke.

The collars you have selected are really nice, though!

  • I got Zip's collar from Northwind Catalog. They're $1 more than Nick's ($13). I went with them b/c they had a ribbon Dp and I agreed on (which wasn't easy, let me tell you). She vetoed just about everything. Zip has the "Tiny Stars on Red" martingale collar. I've always loved red and black.

I asked them to make it 3" smaller than the small size.

BUT, from your options above, I also like the bottom one.

  • Are the photos of the patterns on Nick's website the only ones he uses? Just curious since I have been lookging for a good collar for Dallas but I haven't taken a liking to any of the patterns he offers…

  • Nina,
You can also send him a ribbon you like and tell him what width and collor webbing you want. I tried that and Dp still didn't like the options (picky picky). So I looked at other sites…

  • yeah, I have martingales, but I have never tried a hound collar on.

  • I like the second one. I have bought from All Hounds and really like the service that I got. I did have to use the replacement garuntee and she was very prompt and sending the replacement for the one chewed when I mailed back the hardware.

I get all my collars from All Hounds Apparel. They usually set up a booth at the shows so I was able to meet her personaly. She makes my collars custome because my boy is really strong and he can frey a martengale. She sews a thicker backing to reinforce it.
I've never had a problem returning a collar which is great. I've only purchased martengales though. I say buy both! They both are beautiful. :)

  • Thanks for all the help. I got the martingale one for now. Maybe I'll get the hound collar later, but I figured I'd get the kind I already know and swear by.

@ELERICKSON40: Yes I agree. She is quite the mighty hunter and her nose is to the ground always!! Alot of times when she is digging in the couches and chairs she is trying to bury a bone. She will stuff a bone into the corner and actually take her nose and push imaginary dirt?? over the bone. It makes us laugh!! Yea, my B does the same, the first time I saw this I was so intriged, they are so smart. It is a funny thing to watch, Sahara will take a bone around the house in her mouth for the perfect place to bury it. If she can't find a place she is happy with she will prance around whinning the sadest noise like she is so sad. I actually pitch in and help her find a place, and she will most of the time agree on the place, she checks it out and then walks off. These dogs spoil you for any other breed, they are the best.

Ninabeana – I'm echoing ChaseandZahra and others here but TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS on this because the p.b. certainly will pick up on them. Have your brother contact the pitbull rescue societies as well as the military support groups. It's tough I know.

Well, Tosca is just fine I think:) I was kinda worried last night, as the emergency vet said it would probably be ok since she only had half a pill, but they said I could call poison control to be sure. Well, that was going to be pretty expensive (55) so I wasn't too crazy calling about half of a pill, plus she seemed ok, and the vet seemed pretty confident. Then this morning I was a little worried again because she wouldn't eat more than about half her food, which is extrememly unusual, she usually gobbles it right up! But I had to go to work, and I called our usual vet on the way and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Luckily, now that I am home tonight she seems fine:) Thanks for the suggestions, we just got Tosca in Feb and this is the first time I have ever had a dog ( I was deathly scared of them as a kid) but she really has grown on me, she is so sweet, and not like a normal dog.
