Sisters?

Basenji Talk
  • Reading all of the stories about B's and their special ways I have to believe that Basenji's and Shib Inu's are sisters under the skin. Karin and I have just adopted a sweet little B 2 months ago, but we have been parents of a pair of Shiba Inu's for 8 years. Shiba's are another breed that does not bark, unless there is a very good reason to do so, they will make a number of odd sounds as B's do. Our 8yo Shiba, Sable, has taken Bitty under her supervision and has shown her the ropes. They now share toy destuffing, paper napkin shredding, and cat pouncing duties. Bitty is slowly teaching Sable how to do a Shiba form of a B Baroo. I can't help but think that somewhere back in the mists of time these 2 breeds had a close connection.

  • It is joked in the dog show world that Basenjis are Shiba without hair, by Shiba fanciers and Shiba's are Basenjis with hair by Basenji Fanciers…..

    Totally agree;)

  • I guess that explains it then. It is so hilarious watching the 2 of them tearing through the house. Clockwise Sable is the chaser and Bitty is the chasee, counterclockwise they switch. The hardwood floor in the kitchen and around the island makes their game even funnier to watch.

  • We notice that the shibas and basenjis seem to get along at first sight at the dog park, like they recognize a relative. The first shiba I ever met was red and looked just like my Ginger (red basenji), except furry. Friends walked up and commented on Ginger's long fur, and were amazed it wasn't her. A trip to the groomer for a haircut, and Bogie and Ginger would have passed for twins.

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

sigh Poor little basenjis. :( This makes me all the more happier that I bought from a great breeder (FoPaws) who made sure I knew about the breed and who stressed returning Kipawa for any reason should things not work out (sorry Therese and Kevin, you'll never get him back! :) ). And kudos to Sharron and everyone here who patiently answered all of my questions for almost a year, prior to me getting Kipawa. With FoPaws and all of you, I knew what to expect, and I was able to determine if the antics of a basenji were acceptable for our home. And they are - we laugh at them, and every night when we first get into bed with Kipawa, we thank Therese and Kevin for all the time they put into their breeding program and the training and socialization they worked on to make Kipawa a very special little man.
