How to research breeder and parents

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I just got AKC reg papers on our rescue B. Fiji is a pet, and spayed, so it's not about reproducing but I'm wondering if there's a way to research the breeder and parents in terms of health issues.

The breeder was Warren Hensley – the woman we got her from said he was in Texas. Sire is listed as Julius Czar Hensley and the Dam as Calpurnia Hensley. If anyone knows anything about this breeder, or knows other ways I could research, I'd appreciate it.

  • You can look up Fiji's parents on Sally Wallis's pedigree website, http://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com

  • there is a basenji pedigree search, also you can look at the OFA site. All you need is the parents' names or registration numbers.

  • Thanks! The pedigree site is amazing - takes it all the way back. I'm still trying to figure out if it lists Fanconi info.

  • It does but only if the dog has been listed on the OFA site. Do a reverse pedigree on Haynie's Cassandra, Julius Czar Hensley's dam and you will see that his littermate Haynie's Mystic Inferno has produced and affected puppy designated with by (AFS) next to its name in the pedigree

  • In the first four generation of Julius Czar Hensley, there has been no DNA Fanconi testing, however as lvoss pointed out there was Fanconi produced. And in the four generations on the Dam side there has been no DNA Fanconi testing. On Sally's site, tested dogs have the results by their names with CL for clear, CR for Carrier, AFS for Affected. My suggestion is that you think about doing the DNA test for Fanconi on your Basenji.

Also, I would doubt that there has been any other health testing, so I doubt this Sire and Dam would be on the OFA site

  • Thank you all for the help translating this info.

Yes, I think we will register her with the project and have her tested. My impression was that there had been no testing. The woman we got her from had never heard of Fanconi and I haven't found anything on the breeder- except now on Sally's site, where he just seems to have Fiji's Sire and Dam.

    This forum is so incredible!

So sad the people out there that don't know about the health concerns in a breed and just sell for profit… but you can learn about them at www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org

Chances of you finding anything out about the breeder would be slim, I would think…..

@JoT: Salis, Please contact Liz Hansen at the research lab and inform her of this situation. She will need the full names of your dog and both parents. Please send her an email at : HansenL@missouri.edu, Liz is very nice and quite helpful. She will help you understand the results. She will investigate your test. JoT, thank you! I've already wrote Liz Hansen:-) I'm a bit unlucky with it test, i made order in January and after half a year I got this result! Lucky it's not affected!

@dcmclcm4: What kind of autoimmune problem does she have? Does she have any other eye problem or just the PPM strands? Jennifer @sharronhurlbut: So when you see blue eyes on a b, its PPM strands? Sayblee had autoimmune issues and had multiple surgeries to remove inflammations. She died 9/9/09 from Lymphoma after 5 mos of failed chemotherapy protocols. I actually posted about it here, think I even put up pictures. Arwen only has massive PPM strands. She will be 8 in 2 wks, thus far has been healthy as a horse otherwise. When I say blue, I don't mean REALLY blue as in pigment. I meant just so many strands they have very blue cast and you can easily see the strands in the light. The UGA eye specialist doing CERF said.. "wow, I haven't seen this many strands in a very long time!" He asked me to bring him back to him, FREE, to see how many went away after a year. Some did but she still has heavy strands.

@khanis: Pat…....... that line means that if your puppy is out of two fanconi clear parents, it doesn't need to be tested to find out whether or not it will ever get Fanconi... I should have been more clear, as of course we know that I am aware of what should/should not require testing. If anyone wants that article, feel free to email me [bennyburnerbono at aol dot com] and I can send it in a word document. I have another one as well…. having bred and lived with Fanconi Affecteds, I have had my eyes opened far wider than ever imagined to this disastrous disease! Kathy, I think that many of us have had our eyes opened really far wide… not only about Fanconi but about the practice of some breeders that many would consider "responsible"..... Sad as that is.... Thanks for posting that article... it is very well done... and should be an eye opener to many....
