Cara (BRAT) and Arwen (breeder) results

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Trying to give myself the same pep talk I would anyone. It really isn't that bad, just would have loved probable CLEAR for more ease of mind. But heck, even clear, you keep testing so not really a big deal, right? Sigh.

As some may recall, the puppymiller responsible for the Wimauma pack has been a thorn for a decade. The good side of that was that until this year, not one dog from him had been reported to have Fanconi. Then a relatively young one (about 3 yrs old) was dx recently. The pep talk side is, for crying out loud, did anyone REALLY think none of the dogs were carriers and that it would never occur?

So by now you guessed… Cara is probable carrier. And Arwen is probable clear.

Feel free to share the results on any list. Relatives of Arwen should know. Since the breeder never sent her reg papers she is in data base, they won't find her with regular AKC and OFA checking.

  • Yes, it could be worse, so Carrier is better then Affected….. and you are right, it is really NOT that bad!

In regards to Arwen, even if her papers were not sent in, you listed her (what would be registered name/sire/dam) for the data base, right? So the only thing that is missing is the AKC number. Honestly, most time I seach by the name or part of the name.

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

@Kipawa: Good results! :) And kudos to you for starting strip testing next year. Kipawa will either be clear or carrier. I'm going to send away for the test soon. You hope. Please remember the test is linkage, not clear genetic. While your chances are VERY good for clear or carrier, keep in mind that isn't 100 percent sure.

Neither the sire, Bongo nor the dam of your dog is in the Basenji Pedigree Database. It is important to have the non-AKC registered dogs in it. Please e-mail Sally Wallis with all of the pedigree information at sally.wallis@btopenworld.com If Bongo was used as a breeding dog for many years, he may not get along with other male dogs. Was Bongo turned over to BRAT by Esh or did someone else own him? Many PA commercial dog breeders got out of the business when PA passed the new dog kennel laws. I could not find a USDA license nor a PA Kennel license for Esh. Thanks, Jennifer

@etzbseder: Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable. Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you. Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.
