Kinda gross question..

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • hello- it's kinda hard to describe but does anyone know why one of my boys would poop slimmy, membrane-like, moucus looking poop?? sorry its not the prettiest picture, but i dont know what it is from?? i got a new bag of treats, same brand different flavor, but they only get about 4-6 a day, and they are mini size. thanks!

  • I have seen that a few times, and it's always been when a new treat was introduced, or if they ate too many veggies that day. Try to not give him the treats for a few days and see if it changes, and if it does then you have your answer and those treats will all have to be eaten by the other pup or the garbage disposal lol.

  • thanks for the advise- i'll stop those treats and see how it goes..

  • The slime covered poop usually means they've eaten something that has upset their digestive system–could either be something bad or something new--or just digestive system upset in general. Hopefully, it will clear up quickly. I think it's not quite as bad as having liquid poop squirting out frequently.

  • Does your B lick their butt, Sahara licks and licks, and licks at times, for 5-10mins at a time. Not all the time, but there are days, man I mean she is licking, and licking, smelling, lick, smell, lick. Anyone else had their B do this?

Typically that means that her anal glands need to be expressed

Yep mine both do this when I need to empty their glands

Yes–it's almost certainly anal glands when they lick like that.

  • Oh boy. Emptying an anal gland? How on earth does one do that? (And why? <- genuine question from a neophyte)

And just because she can "chew" on the other side, food stuffs and bacteria can still get in through the bad tooth. Honestly, not something to put off….. the sooner the better

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

Thank you for all the information. I am going to a dog show in Springfield, Illinois next weekend to meet some dogs from Meiterhaus (Tad Brooks). This makes me feel alot more comfortable. :D

Puppies usually "blow" their baby coat after teething and the color fo the coat will change at time…. So yes their coats to change, but not a lot... just like some pedigrees have black masking aroung the face (muzzle and eyes) that will fade with age. Also on Basenjis, the white never changes size... so a big white spot will be much smaller when full grown. Looking at the picture of your Kona, I would say that the white between his eyes was almost the entire area between the eyes when born
