Basenji Talk

  • Arti is the most handsome B & W I have seen followed by Jasper of Basenji Park.

    Youngandtired-actually Jasper is a brindle…it's Willy that's the GORGEOUS b/w :D :D

  • @ChristyRutherford:

    Cute! I love this picture!

That is Mickii with her impression of "stickem up"…. and her grand daughter will do the same thing!

  • @ChristyRutherford:

Here is a picture of Squiggy with my Mom's BRAT Petey.

    He's beautiful!!

    Love that picture!! So adorable!!

  • Okay, I was hesitant to reply to this thread (other than to compliment all of your dogs!), but I guess I will weigh in:
I have always loved the R/Ws - I "ordered" one (LOL), but the one bitch didn't take and there were only R/W males. That's how we ended up with Nala, our beautiful tri.
I have to say that now, since joining this forum, I really could not decide which color I like best. They are all beautiful and each dog is unique and special with their own personalities and personally, I'd take them all!!!

  • Seems judges favor Reds from my experience.

    No one talks about Trindles?
That's one combination I really do not like (sorry if someone here has one)

you going to have to show me some fantastic ones!

go here to see a fabulous trindle…if it doesn't take you directly to his page go to "Tazi" on the scroll bar on the left.

I don't mind trindles...I have seen some great ones. I think if the stripes aren't REALLY clearly defined in the tan, it just looks kinda murky...so that detracts from the look.

  • Sophie's sire is a trindle and I think he is quite handsome. A real sweetheart too.

  • Christy - lovely looking tri! I like it as well. Can't say i've seen one like it before.

just a question… what is the little grey thing by his tail?

  • My least favorite color is Trindle, while I can appreciate a good dog regardless of colow, I don't want a Trindle, I am too partcial to Tri's to accept the muddy color of a Trindle…against the clear color of a Tri... but again... that is me... and yes it is only color... but we all have our preferences...

  • If it's a Basenji I like em all! I've had tri ,red/wht and blk. No brindle yet.

    Thank you! He's my buddy.
The little grey thing is one of my past hairless kittens.
Kind of like a little alien.
He enjoyed unraveling Squiggys tail and watching it roll back up.

Furless cats and barkless dogs….who would have thought up that :)

And even with that preference it didn't stop you from co-breeding a litter with a trindle sire. Having a preference for a color doesn't mean we can't appreciate a dog of a different color and even use those dogs in a breeding program.

  • So it's Willy, anyways BB knew what I meant, he knows which B&W is the most handsome, he has ribbons to prove it, he is so beautiful, I want one someday, maybe, I really love R & W too.

  • Tanza, that pic of "stickem up" is SOOOO hilarious! I literally laughed out loud. Thanks for adding that!

While I too love all Basenji's and would seriously take one in every color- I still have preferences. I like the reds with white blazes on their faces the most. Tri's come in second place for me- but it seems like some of their faces are better looking than others and I can't figure out what makes it that way- it's got to be slight variations in their markings. I'll have to study pics side by side. But I love their unique markings. I really wanted a brindle, but my hubby doesn't care for the color. I agree with BBoy that when their stripes are clearly defined, they look really exotic. Black & whites are probably my least favorite- I don't know why but I feel like they look more ordinary than the others. That is stupid, I know. All Basenji's are still better looking than any other dogs though! Holy Basenji snob!! :)

And Lexi was my first love, but she is what we call a "mouse dog"… because she is SOOOOO petite. She has a really small face, tiny frame, and even daintier paws! I think she has better white markings than Miles though. (Miles's blaze is off center) And I love that Lexi has only two freckles- right on her nose. I think of them as little beauty marks. Sexy Lexi!! :)

Okay, okay… Lexi's pretty much the super model of Basenji's now... she's has so many photo shoots, it's hilarious! When I pull out the camera, she'll run and pose... Cracks every body up!

I think Miles is a much more handsome Basenji. He's at the opposite end of the spectrum though- the biggest R/W male I've seen! He has a much more substantial head than Lexi. And their ears are pointed in slightly different directions. He's nearly impossible for me to pick up though- he's gotten SOOOO heavy now!! HAM MAN!

Everyone has such beautiful dogs! I really love them all!!

  • Obsession. The first step is admitting it.

  • The Christmas Ham: Miles

Exactly… Lisa!!! and proud to be a co-breeder/co-owner!!!!

  • I also prefer not a lot of white, especially on the face…

I see your post was back in Jan. so I hope you have your new basenji settled in. I also adopted a beasenji in Jan. She is my second. I adopted a 5 year old to be with my 3 yr. old, who had had 2 litters in the past and was bred for a 3rd one, but didn’t get pregnant. So the breeder, the same breeder our boy came from, decided to let her go to a forever home. I had to wait quite a while for her to be ready and I felt just like you. I couldn’t wait! I kept texting the breeder questions, request for photos, etc. When we picked her up she seemed comfortable with us right from the start. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, a good match for our 3yr. old boy. He’s a toughie but I think he’s met his match with her. He’s so much happier with his own friend. They love to be together. I hope your new pup is adjusting just as well as mine. Have fun. I think they make us laugh every day. Yes, you have to be on your toes with these guys, you have to make them a big part of your life. They can never just be a fixture. They are work but it’s worth it all. 3 years ago I was a newbie but not anymore, and I’m loving this wild ride.

It is difficult to tell a tri Rat Terrier from a tri Basenji in some of the shelter photos. I have to ask does it have a tail and what type! Jennifer

Sugar gets the 'winter nose' thing. It does get a pinkish black, but in summer goes straight back to black. All puppies are born with the pink noses and they later fill in. Talker still has a little bit of pink which I expect will fill in.

I slice it and then cube it. Each cube ends up being no bigger than about a pea. I then have storage container that I put it in and keep it in the refrigerator. The great thing about it is that I can easily break the cube into even smaller pieces while I am working the dogs so they last the entire training class without really overfeeding the dogs.
