  • My 3&1/2 year old girl B was diagnosed with Distemper in March and she's lost some muscle. we've cut back the prednisone but she now likes to eat bugs and dead earth worms in the back yard. Is there some kind of supplement I can give her to up the protein in her diet? (I'm guessing that's what she needs because she's eating the bugs and worms). Has anyone out there tried the "Missing Link" supplement? She currently eats ProPlan and Blue Buffalo with helpings of Wellness wet food everyday. She also gets a Pet Tab Plus everyday. Thanks for any advice.

  • Missing link is a great supplement… I have used it for years.... but I would doubt that eating the worms and bugs would indicated the need for protein... especially dead ones....????

  • MMMMMM chewy rubber-like substance!

  • SO sorry to hear about the distemper affecting your little one :( There's some proteins in veggies..have you tried feeding home made veggies??

  • Maybe there's some mineral imbalance. Check out Dinovite on the web. It contains different earth clays and probiotics.

@tanza I agree entirely ! I never minded plump puppies - but they need to achieve correct weight and maintain it through maturity and into old age ! I don't make any distinction between 'show weight' and anything else. A Basenji carrying too much weight is putting unnecessary strain on the organs and it is as harmful to them as to humans, for the same reasons. I clouded up and rained all over my puppy people who allowed their Basenjis to put on too much weight. I am still laughing about an incident after I judged in the Czech Republic - after the show I heard one exhibitor tell another 'my dog is not fat ! He is carrying too much weight !' Which is an expression I often use when judging - it conveys the message without offending the handler ! Condition is key - mine run free for miles most days and even my two current oldies are of correct weight and fit as fiddles - they are probably fitter than I am.

Ok, just had to add some more. Had a friend over yesterday (our first thanksgiving turkey, then Thursday again!) and she saw Hershey 12.8 years old and she mentioned how alert he was. Coat and eyes were clear and shiney! I was really excited to hear this as I read this about others' dogs in different forums etc. So, anyone thinking about it, it is not a fad…..it works and they all love it!

I tried answering via my phone, but I guess it didn't work. I usually don't measure but mix it all into their meats, or kibble if they are on it. They love quinoa, shoot they love anything coming from the kitchen..:) Usually a few times a week, to maybe three times a week, veggies they get daily and green smoothies, at least Otis, he adores my green smoothies.

Giardia can actually be very difficult to clear up. What medication did the vet use? Did they keep prescribing the same medication or did they try something else to see if Benga responded better to another? I know that with Nicky we had tried Flagyl but it would recur and then tried Panacur and it finally cleared up. As for the food if you are looking for something less rich, try California Natural. It is made by the same company as Evo but is not as rich as Evo.

There is also a low fat EVO that is meat and fruit, no grains… I have been slowly changing mine to it and they are doing great... but until you have the intestinal issues under control, I would keep him on that if that is what your Vet is recommending. And for the skin you can get 3V Caps.. they are a great supplement
