Training Invisible Fence Age Related

    You know, with all said and with experience with the underground fence, I am now at a crossroad with age related training. Because:

    Daisy (5 mos old) just got her collar. She is doing AMAZINGLY well! Way better than Duke at same age - (surely personality and mix difference). BUT . . . She hears that beeper and comes right back to Mom/Dad/Son with PRAISE. We intentionally made her have a low frequency shock as per training guideline. Once she hears that beep, it seems to be the only learning curve versus Dukes. What a girl!! Duke was the same age when we got the fence 1 year ago except Duke (my little nut) tested it soooo many times his battery went low way to early.

    Now however, Duke is MOST respectful of his boundry lines. So wouldn't you think that the younger they are trained the best scenario/outcome with this feisty little breed? Granted, mine are mixes, but age related training may play a big factor in success.

    Each dog is different.. as is their learning curve and/or pain tollerence… IMO

    I do not think it is an age thing. Each dog is an individual and their learning curve and pain tolerance is different. Rally as a pup would run up to our cats get swatted on the nose pop back then charge in a again until she was separated from them because she did not make the connection that the cat swatting her was a message to stay away. Ringo, Rally's son, has been taking trips out to a barn that has an enclosure of geese. He goes up to the geese sticks his head in get bit, pulls his head out, looks at them a little while then sticks his head back in and gets bit again. This is not a dumb dog, he very quickly picked up commands like wait, break, ready, etc but just doesn't connect the punishment with the message "Don't stick your nose in the goose enclosure."

    I'm just hoping for some encouragement. Yesterday was her first day. She is a real softy kind of girl. (fingers and paws crossed for the next week or so) Will keep you posted with her progress. It is hard for me too…

    That is so great, Jill. We have ours set at the next to highest level for Nala. My husband always says, "one more notch up and she'll just be a puff of smoke" if she goes through it"! LOL! Seriously, it's great when they learn quickly. One word of caution is to set the boundary to it's largest setting when you get snow in the winter. We had so much snow that the boundary wasn't high enough to cover the snow "mountains" that had piled up and the little she-devil figured it out! They each are different and most are so smart!

    OK. Age related or not. Daisy is being the MOST observant here. Daisy hears the beep - and WHAM! Back to her hooo-mans! The last 2 days - I have not observed her to come close to the lines. YAY - DAISY - WOO HOO!!! That is exactly the praise she gets. There are flags everywhere now. She sees them and "bam", she backs away! I do believe I have a very smart girl on my hands - different than Duke who is always testing, testing-testing!

Even the analogy you offered is an indication that you don't value anyone who doesn't have a degree. Frankly, if you are hearing conflicting opinions about the same piece of art, get a third opinion. The person with the degree may have just scraped by with a C+, while the person who devoted decades may have been under the tutelage of a Master Artist. And really, if you are planning to purchase such a prized piece of Art, shouldn't you educate yourself so you can make an intelligent decision instead of allowing others to tell you what to buy? As an aside: The original YouTube link remains, but we certainly do not need her entire catalog of videos. Sharing information is one thing, advertising for someone is another. I would hope that you understand that not everything you see online is true. Including claims to be an expert, certified, trained, Dr., etc., etc. Lots of people in the world are just selling a story.

    @Kosuzu: I will get into agility when he is a little older, his bones are still too immature for that yet. I would also like to get Khalani into becoming a "therapy" dog as he has a beautiful nature, He can't be assessed for that until he is at least 18 months old. You must tell me more about the "skateboard", does he ride it? Have you ever videoed your agility, I'd love to see that. There are a few youtube videos of Zest! doing agility. Just seach "Zest Agility" and the r/w little basenji is mine. Those are all from her Novice days. She's now in Excellent. We've had quite a few set backs, but she has achieved her excellent agility titles in AKC. Hopefully, you'll be able to find a local agility class. There are lots of foundation work you can do with puppies before you start doing jumps and weaves. The other two (Digital the brindlewonderkid and Jet the trying) are retired, but have certainly done a lot. Therapy work is so rewarding! You'll love it. Z and I are off to the Alzheimer's facility tomorrow. Both my boys also really loved it.

    I think incorporating some crate training if none is being used will help. If you take him outside and he does not go potty, when you bring him back in, he must go in crate for about twenty minutes or so and not be allowed to roam or play. Then outside again to potty spot. If he does not go again repeat in crate for twenty minutes then out to potty spot and naturally praise like crazy when he does go. The idea is to get him to go potty when you want and where you want. I felt using the crate was extremely beneficial. Chris Battistelli

    quick note- I don't feed raw; i feed a grain free commercial dog food (there are now quite a few on the market) and have been very happy. I do feed some cooked muttloaf (http://www.maryshouse.us/Recipes.htm) with the evening meal.

    @tanza: I think you are waiting too long. You should have two complete sets of shots before class. Waiting till they are 15/16wks you are missing critical socialization skills. Waiting for "all the shots" is pretty much old school these days. My pups go out even before that to things like lure trials… you just need to be careful and not let them "get" into anything like "old poop" laying around. I'm planning on taking her around the time of the 2nd shots if I can. But the problem is that the next round of puppy classes doesn't start till the last week of March, which would be around 14 weeks anyway. Maybe they will let me join the last half of the previous class but I'd have to check into that.
