What age should lure coursing training start?

    I have been playing w/Tobias and a plastic bag tied to a pole and he loves it!! I want to get him started on this fascinating sport, one that he seems very fond of. He is now 14 months old. Where can I go to find a good trainer in my area? I live very close to Nashville(about 35 miles) but it seems like there is nobody who has any experiance w/ Basenjis, 60% of the people I have contacted dont even know what a Basenji is. These people are missing out on a wonderful breed. Petco and Petsmart have trainers but not for lure coursing. Any ideas?

    There are no trainers for Lure Coursing. You will need to go to either the ASFA website, Http://www.asfa.org or the AKC events calendar, Http://www.akc.org to find a lure coursing event in your area. Usually clubs hold practices after the completion of the trial, time permitting. Building interest in the plastic bag like you are doing is about the only real training you can do, your dog will either chase the bag or it won't.

    Hey Barkless… I have heard that Chattanooga Kennel Club is involved with lure coursing.. but I don't know that for a fact. I have found no one in Knoxville yet. I am still searching. Good luck. Let us know if you have any luck.

    From the ASFA website there are 3 ASFA approved clubs in Tennessee, Chattanooga Kennel Club, Maury County County Kennel Club, and Borzoi Club of Greater Atlanta. All have an email address and phone number of their club contact.

    quick tip, buy your lure coursing collar ahead of time. They sell them online and are much cheaper than buying at an event.

    I had to buy one for Caesar when I was there for him to participate and they were over the top with pricing….

    There is LC in Columbia Ky the weekend of 17 Nov. there will be practices on the Sat around 3 pm. The next closer would be the Indianapolis area the weekend before that. Most Of us drive 6-12 hours for any lC events in the Midwest

    @Mojo's: We took Mojo lure coursing for the first time a couple of weeks ago- he loved it! There was one lady who said if they ever do actually go after a real animal- say a bird or rabbit- and catch it, they will lose interest in lure cousing- they will want real prey. NOT TRUE… gggg..... Maggii loved to course... caught and killed 3 squirrels in our yard... never made a difference. Mickii caught and killed 2 ground squirrels on outdoor off lead runs... never made a difference (Oh and add one bird plucked out of the sky)... C-Me, just a year old now.. loves coursing... at 4 1/2 months caught her first squirrel in the yard and at 7 1/2 months one baby bird out of the sky

    @ibi_n_sane: yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too! we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha ) I loved to see Barry (the galgo) run.. he ran beautiful…. :D And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

    Good for Zahra! Sometimes they just get so excited they just have to pee! But it's great that she went back on the course. Dude has a thing for brindles. His wrestling and racing buddy here at home is our crazy Energizer (you know, she keeps going and going…) brindle Amina. So when he went against a brindle boy in the first heat he charged gleefully over to him at the end - the boy was not impressed! In the second heat he was up against a dark brindle girl who even looks like our Amina. At the end of that one he ran over to her and they took a tour of the field together. He's not aggressive about it, he just wants to play! He totally ignored the reds that were also coursing. Terry
