Your B and Fluffy

Basenji Talk
  • Does anyone else have B's that only seem aggressive around small fluffy dogs? We live on the third story in an apartment so Alani gets to see all the dogs being walked and the only thing she ever does is pace a little and whine sometimes. Recently we've had two different people move in with some pomeranians and some people with a shitzu (sp?). Everytime she sees any of them she goes absolutely nuts, growling, running back and forth pawing at the deck. It's crazy, we have to keep on the look out now and put her in anytime they're being walked. It's weird, she's never done this with any of the bigger dogs (and we have a ton of dogs in our complex).

  • Small and Fluffy dogs look like "prey"…. pretty much a normal Basenji trait... my friend's old boy used to hate any "hairy" dog big, small, or middle size... when I used to show him, I hated when the Old English were in the ring next to us...gggg

  • Yeah I guess it is fluffy in general because she has the same reaction with an Australian Shepherd that comes around every now and then.

  • My B dosen't act aggresive but I do have to watch when he's around all size, fluffy dogs cause he loves to pull on hair. I'm not safe from this either, he pulls on my hair all the time.

  • When Nala was a 10 week old puppy, we took her to my sister's house. My Mom & Dad were visiting with their ~13 year old Shih Tzu, "Kiwi". Poor Kiwi, she was herded around by a little tri tazmanian devil…she had this pitiful look on her face as if to say, "Save me...please", so we held her on our laps while Nala would jump up and grab her fluffy tail. She got her due, though...she ended up with a kind of hairball! That'll teach 'em. (LOL)

  • Yup fluffy dogs get the worse reactions…whiney, yelling, racing around in circles..etc. etc. etc.

  • Jenny likes white and fluffy as her combination, and she just likes to get some hair between her front teeth so she can run around looking like she needs her chin wiped. We have a fluffy white-ish cat that is an occasional victim. At the dog park I have to watch out for the little Alaskan Eskimo Dogs and Samoyed (sp?) or she may hassle them.

  • well this morning I was going for our morning run and happened to come across what I think was a cocraspanial, with lots of hair and fluffy ears, yikes watch out. Well we let our dogs socialize but I could tell my b was getting anxiouse to just grab one of the ears so I held him by the halter while he continued sniffing and getting to know the other dog. Well the owner of the spanial said "you are making him nervouse holding him like that", I was thinking hey lady you don't know my B he'll grab one of those fluffy ears just for fun. All good then we said our goodbyes and of course as we were going the opposite direction, he jumped forward and grabbed the corner of the fluffy ears. Have to laugh though. Don't you just love when other people try to teach you about your own B's?

  • My dogs want to pluck those dogs like chickens.

@Forever: I have been looking at him too lol my area my color and he seems sweet and he likes cats too though I can't say my cat will like him. I need to jump in and get my bratt visit done then see what happens. My problem is no fence yet. I know that is a mark against me. It is what keeps me from calling for the visit. We had plans but life happened and no fence again. Zoe seems happy with her daily walks and house play. She doesn't seem to mind being tied outside because we keep her company. I guess when the right time and b happen all will work itself out. But one thing about bratt is my worry about fanconi not sure they are tested. I worry about zoe I dont want that worry with another dog I agree with you… you already know about Zoe... and to adopt another that could be Affected... well, I certainly understand ... and FYI, they are not for the most part DNA tested... it is not something that BRAT requires... I would suppose that if you were interested in a certain dog that you could make that a condition of adoption, that he/she be tested first.... but I have no idea how BRAT would react to that...

A coupple of issues in this thread! (Way to multi-task here people!) Treats: the whole "upset tummy" is definately a too much of a good thing issue. Whatever you decide to treat with, make them very small and just watch how much you give. My dogs go nuts for bologna or plain ham. Cheese is the perenial favorite, but never underestimate the power of a "Good Boy!!" Coats & "Cold" Weather: My boys have it rough. Living in the Midwest, it is not uncomming to spend all witner in the single digits (not counting windchill which often kicks us into the negative teens, if not worse). Both boys have dog coats made by Lands End in the same style (and cold weather specifications) as their Squall jacket series. It consists of an easy belly band and front chest closure meathod. No worries about tails or legs. Easy on, easy off. And my boys live in them during the winter. Dogs, just like people, quickly acclimate to the weather. If we deicde it's "Cold" at 50 degrees, they start to feel that way. If we decide 50 is downright balmy, the dogs learn that too. Walking: Oh, the perenial issue of B's! I agree with many of the posters here: it's all in the tone and your attitude. If you decide to be upbeat and positive and decisive, the B will follow! (But probably will quit at mile 6 if he hasn't had his ice cream yet… grin)

So, we did decide to get the kitten and it's been a couple weeks since we brought him home. He is about 6 months old at this point. Zuri loves to chase him and they play quite a bit….sometimes rougher that I would like but when Tony is fed up, he goes in his cat tree out of Zuri's reach....and well, when Zuri is fed up...wait a minute, that never happens. Anyway, so far all is going quite well. Brenda

May want to try a hot oil treatment like VO5. I've heard that helps as well. I'm going to try it on Shadow in a week or so-I like to wait until he gets good and dirty!

They are called Diastix. Some drug stores still carry them, but many have to special order them. You can find them online though.
