My name is Kirsten and I have a 3 year old border collie, a ragdoll cat, and a new, one year old basenji named Maddy Keller. I adopted Maddy Keller from the local pound. I thought she was some interesting type of mix. I didn't know that Basenji could look like this. After looking into the Basenji breed, Maddy Keller seems ALL Basenji.
I also didn't know that she was deaf. I saw this calm, quiet, intelligent looking little girl who needed a home. She was a little mouthy and completely untrained so I knew I was getting a fixer upper. All I knew of her history was that she was adopted out once from the pound and then again picked up as a stray. They traced her back to her new family through her microchip. They did not want her back!!!!!! She is a sweet little girl who while I was typing this just cleaned my dinner plate for me. Maddy has shown much improvement with learning sign language, potty training, riding in cars, going to work, living in an apartment with another dog and a cat. She does however have food aggression and social issues with other dogs. She likes other dogs but she seems to have trouble with communication. I take her to the local park and have had issues with her interaction with other dogs. She and my other dog have had many altercations which I have been breaking up. Triggers are over food or when Maddy plays too rough. They are better now but my border collie seems nervous of her and avoids her. Maddy Keller tries to slink up next to her to cuddle in the dog bed. Sadly Bella wants nothing to do with her.
I have had one session so far with a dog trainer to try to work on Maddy Kellers issues. I am considering re-homing her. I think that she has wonderful potential but the only kind of adequate excercise that I can offer her is at the local park with other dogs and that is not really going well. It's so sad. She really wants to play with the other dogs but they just don't seem to like her. I had her in the tennis courts but as the weather gets warmer this will not work. If anyone has any experience with Basenji and behavior issues of this sort mainly food aggression (she did bite me once) and dog socialization. Her deafness hasn't really been an issue but makes correcting the other issues a challenge.
We are working with positive training techniques and she is certainly food motivated. I'm not sure that keeping her is in her best interest in the long run but I am trying to assess whether these issues can be corrected. I need some insight from those of you who are very familiar with this breed.
Thanks,
Kirsten and Maddy Keller
