Oh MY!! Cali Yodeled

    I cant believe it really happened. Cali is a Basenji mix (the vet thinks she is mixed with Jack Russell) and I never thought she would yodel. I had a friend over today and we were listening to music, when all of a sudden during the song Cali started yodeling:D My friend joked that he didnt know my dog could sing:) I have only heard a Basenji yodel on the Basenji episode on Breed About It and also on the internet. I still cant believe it. The only sounds she ever makes are barks, woofs, whining and crying. I was listening to Fergies new CD. The entire episode only lasted about 4 minutes, but I was still shocked. I figured with her being a B mix that I would never experience this. I wish I would have had my voice recorder handy. She must have been in a really good mood today because I gave her 2 of her favorite toys this morning. I tried to get her to do it again, but she ran off and started playing with her toys. She never ceases to amaze me and this was a really good Christmas present.:)

    lol nice congrats, i think you've seen lucy yodel before i posted the video,
    If you want to see her do it again try getting a music instument perferably a harmonica and play it thats what gets Lucy fired up = )

    @renaultf1: Honestly, there is nothing cuter than baby yodels!! It is great that Malaika yodels. When Liyah was a pup, if the adults wouldn't play with her, she would bring stuffed animals to her reflection in the stereo cabinet and then would dance around and yodel to her reflection to try to get her to play :D:D. Liyah is the big talker of my 3 - when she wants Brando to play, she will pet him on his head and start talking to him - very comical! :D:D Oh, and we call Brando and Liyah the lovebirds because they are so enthralled with each other! That's so nice :)

    Thanks woofless I did take everyones advice and would egg her on and I managed to get her to baroo twice but it took like 5 minutes of voice and I was almost horse each time. lol this was weeks ago now and I havent got her to do it again beside I was exhaused after the effort. I am resigned to a silent dog except for an occational whine. We cant even get her to howl. All my friends think I should be thanking the lord for such a quiet dog but like you I was hoping to get the yodel that I remembered so well as a kid. I havent been to the dog park yet maybe the excitement will get it out of her I hope to get there tomorrow since i'm off work.

    Thank you JoeyQ for getting this thread back on topic :) Not that puppy mill/responsible breeding isn't a good thread… :p and there might be one on this very forum. Nice to see so many Basenjis that go against (somewhat) the stereo-types. I feel lucky because Jenny was a 7 month old shelter dog - stray - and really must have had a good upbringing because she has always been very handle-able (one of my friends picked her up and stacked her show dog style the first time he met her) and really only fussed (like the dickens!) in the crate the first night or two. I would remind those who are having difficulty crating: your emotions are a factor in how your dog reacts and adapts. The stress of hearing their cries, and worse, often puts an owner on edge enough to subtly (and often not so subtly to most dogs) encourage the behavior. Earplugs help.:o

    Rocket does the same thing when I'm sick, he watches me all day and never leaves my side. Of course I'm in bed all day which is where every B prefers to be!!

    I understand about the Science Diet - all my Basenjis have hated it! We use Eukanuba Lamb and Rice or Kirkland Lamb and Rice from Costco mixed with a little warm water and a tablespoon or so of Pedigree canned. (of course, they also get a little Red Barn rolled, green beans if I'm trying to get them to lose weight, left-over bait from the dog shows… no, ours aren't spoiled either!) Only get the Pedigree canned puppy or the CHOPPED dinners (not the chunk) as those are the only ones without wheat. Lots of Basenjis are sensitive to wheat. My daughter feeds Purina One Lamb and Rice. A plate or pie tin might work for her. Sometimes they just get notions!!! One of my girls won't eat if her dish isn't in the right place on the mat. Terry

    I like Adams flea shampoo. It kills the buggers and leaves the animals hair soft. Haven't used it on my Basenji though, as we just haven't had fleas here for a few years.
