Oh Cali..

Basenji Talk
  • Cali has been a little depressed since my brother picked up his dog(Lady the Boxer) yesterday. Lady had been staying with us for 3 wks while my brother was out of town. I guess Cali really got use to having the companionship even though Cali picked fights with Lady constantly:) I have actually been considering rescueing another Basenji for a companion, but not until the first of the year (I must be crazy). No, actually I love this breed and my next dog will definitely be a Basenji.
Anyway, I was at home very ill today with a bad flare up of my Colitis. I was in a lot of pain and at one point was laying on the bathroom floor. Well Cali tried to comfort me and was licking all over me and trying to get me off the floor. She even kept bringing toys to the bathroom so I could play with her. She can be so sweet sometimes. Even though I was in a lot of pain I did manage to laugh a little due to all of her antics to make me fill better. Anyway, while I was trying to get myself up off the floor Cali walks into the bathroom with a new pair of jeans that I purchased a couple of days ago. She got them out of the laundry room. I guess this was her way of telling me that if I didnt get up she was going to destroy my jeans:eek: She never fails to amaze me and has been pretty good today considering that I have been under the weather. She even took a nap with me.
How do your Baenjis act when you are sick or upset? They are very intuitive.

  • Rocket does the same thing when I'm sick, he watches me all day and never leaves my side. Of course I'm in bed all day which is where every B prefers to be!!

Often dogs don't know WHERE to go, in a new place. So, take them out every 3 hrs and treat/praise with proper elimation. Also, keep the areas of the apt your not in, closed. Keep the dog with you, and if you see the nose down, take it out. This should pass as the dog gets more settled. We travel a lot with our dogs, and we keep them with us in motel rooms, with closets, bathrooms shut. When they act like they are sniffing, we take them out. Also, extra exercise with your b will help. Good luck

well he's fine with everyone BUT the vet himself. its not like hes angry when we go to the actual office. then again he just doesnt like to be touched and seems a bit bipolar to me. ( he really is a basket case. hes attacked my hands, severely, drawing blood and causing brusing, twice last week without being provoked at all )

The neighbors boxer was not so much aggressive with Cali as she was with my brothers boxer. Cali usally plays with their German Shepherd pup and they get along really well. True, I shouldnt have taken Lady anywhere near their boxer, but I thought they would get along because their boxer gets along with the other boxer down the street.. My brother also has a Cane Corso(Italian Mastiff) and a Rottweiler and his Boxer is used to playing with them all of the time because they live together. When I say discipline I mean more of a "time out" in the crate or a stern NO! Sometimes if I clap my hands once and say NO! at the same time she gets the message. I have had her 2 months now and we are both making progress. I am learning what worked for my other dogs does not necessarily work for Cali. I do notice that training her is a lot different from my previous 2 dogs (Pitbull/Rottweiler mix and a German Shepherd). I have been reading a lot of the posts about obedience and training on the forum and it has helped a lot. Cali is like no other dog that I have owned, but I like being challenged.:) :) :)

I had to board my basenji mix last christmas and it was probably the easy boarding of a dog I have done. I had only had Hollie about two weeks (I adopted her out of a shelter) and our attachment really started when I returned. However, I know my boarder as he is also a groomer who groomed my previous poodle mix. My boarder lives on site where his shop is and actually is the one who informed me that Hollie's other mix besides the whippet she was listed as at the shelter, might be basenji. Boy, was he ever right. My boarder has a strong background in dogs and has showed various breeds with AKC. I think getting to know you boarder well is a good thing, you can feel at ease when leaving your furbaby.

I understand about the Science Diet - all my Basenjis have hated it! We use Eukanuba Lamb and Rice or Kirkland Lamb and Rice from Costco mixed with a little warm water and a tablespoon or so of Pedigree canned. (of course, they also get a little Red Barn rolled, green beans if I'm trying to get them to lose weight, left-over bait from the dog shows… no, ours aren't spoiled either!) Only get the Pedigree canned puppy or the CHOPPED dinners (not the chunk) as those are the only ones without wheat. Lots of Basenjis are sensitive to wheat. My daughter feeds Purina One Lamb and Rice. A plate or pie tin might work for her. Sometimes they just get notions!!! One of my girls won't eat if her dish isn't in the right place on the mat. Terry

I like Adams flea shampoo. It kills the buggers and leaves the animals hair soft. Haven't used it on my Basenji though, as we just haven't had fleas here for a few years.
