My first foster

  • i am going to be fostering a little brat girl for just a couple of days. she just needs a transient home, someone has already adopted her. supposedly she is very well behaved. i am hoping she will be a good influence on fender…he opened a christmas present the other day. finals have just ended for me so i will be able to spend lots of time with the b's. wish me luck!

thought i would add pics along with the story
first is fender, next are both star

  • Sounds like it will be interesting. Keep us posted on how she does and how she and fender interact. It's nice to know people are so willing to help… thanks for fostering her.

  • Good luck, what a nice Christmas present for the foster-ee. That is wonderful of you to do. Keep us posted on how things go…

  • okay you guys this is the sweetest girl. all she wants to do is sleep. she completely ignores fender. i just keep reassuring him that he is my baby. the home that we thought she was going to is not going to work out. there is someone else interested. it is so heartbreaking that someone put her out. she seems to prefer my three year old son to any of us.

  • Oh how sweet! Why did they put this cute lil girl out?? I can't imagine who would have the heart to do this.

  • She seems so sweet and how nice that she "chose" your son! He's a cutie too!!

  • thank you. the other people seemed to really think a lot of her. so she is with them, getting to know her new (hopefully) brother, a basenji mix. btw, fender is just fine, he doesnt mind not having competition around!

  • Had to add, I think you're very brave! You have a male Basenji AND a 3 year old, and your tree is on the floor unprotected!! :D Ours is up on a small table and we put a wooden garden fence around it just so the boys don't think, "Cool, indoor plumbing!"

    Terry

  • i am brave? tehehe…stubborn is more the word. the punishment for touching the tree is one present goes in the garbage. i spell garbage g-a-r-a-g-e...luckily, i have only had to put one in the garage so far, it was a quick lesson.

Please go to Basenjirescue.org and join as a member. It will show you are serious about helping. BRAT always needs good foster homes. A home visit will be required (not sure if that is possible at this time considering this COVID-19 crisis). It is especially helpful if you have basenji experience. Not always, but very often, a basenji coming into rescue has special needs (i.e., behavioral, medical, etc.). It is good to ask yourself if you and your family are willing to deal with that. Fostering is hard but it can also be a wonderful and rewarding thing to do.

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

Nayru did get to go. She loved the first stop because there were three children there who adored her. I brought along treats. She was nearly perfect. LOL. Second stop was a B-filled house and she wasn't too big on having to share the pretty redhead,pointy-ear spot.

I have asked the BRAT coordinator to find another foster for Benji. This is just not a good situation for him. Lenny has decided he can not be here. I'm sad about this as I really want to help Benji, but not at the risk of someone, or a dog, getting hurt. It's not a good situation for anyone, especially Benji. I'm sure it's traumatic enough for him without having to be constantly onguard from the resident dog :(

Dash, thanks for the update. I hope Sugar is soon doing better. That heartworm treatment is a b**ch for any dog. I hope your continued updates convince people that the the annual blood work and preventative are well worth their time and money, because as you well know, the alternative is quite a bit more costly and painful for the dog (and family) in the long run. Again, thank you and my prayers to you for a better month for you and Sugar.
